Kinja'd!!!

My wife and I are having a daughter! It is our first, so the anxiety and excitement are at about equal levels right now.

In order to accommodate said daughter, my 135i had to go. Yes, I planned on keeping the car, and the gigantic rear-facing carseat would have just barely fit (I bought one and tried it myself). However, with my future lack of sleep and large diaper-queue, I don’t want to have to deal with the contortions required to get that seat in and out of the car.

So I replaced the 135i with something much more practical with four doors and no shrapnel-spewing airbags. Details soon...

Also, an obituary/review of my 135i, the best car I’ve ever owned, by a large margin.

First daughter, or first kid? Either way, congratulations!

Better just go with the minivan.

Congrats my friend, if I can recommend a book for you (because your wife will want you to read them):

https://www.amazon.com/Guide-Surviving-Pregnancy-Childbirth-Fatherhood/dp/0738210277/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1491834602&sr=8-1&keywords=The+Guy%27s+Guide+to+Surviving+Pregnancy%2C+Childbirth%2C+and+the+First+Year+of+Fatherhood

Great, fun way to get your mind in the right place. Really solid book.

In regards to the big car seat. Buy 2 of them, only ever take them out when 100% required.

For the infant carrier seat. Buy 2 bases. That way you don’t have to unhook the thing and you’re good in both vehicles.

We have a 4 year old, one in heaven, and a 2.5 month old so I’m going through all the infant stuff again right now myself.

Good luck and prepare yourself to start making dad jokes, embrace them, they are amazing.

When you go to look for the back/forward facing seat save yourself the headaches, and start with the Britax clicktight (or comparable/better). Definitely worth it for the ease of taking it in and out.

When we had our first son, we had a Dodge Stratus and a WW Golf (4D). They both worked well enough, though the Dodge didn’t have LATCH (it was a 96). We followed the first kid with twins, and I started looking for something that could haul three kids and two adults, but I didn’t necessarily want an SUV. Then I started imagining three kids shoulder to shoulder on a 10-hour drive and that mini van started looking better and better. We got an 03 Odyssey (which we still have, on its second engine), and it’s been fabulous.

I’ve ridden in friends’ Odyssey’s before and they are great. And, I’d argue, they have tons of character. For my first, I’m only concerned about the carseat fitting in and out of the car without injuring the new baby. Rear doors and decent legroom should be enough for now.

I drove a 2017 Oddy and hated it. It’s a far cry from my 03—big, clunky, overbuilt, hard to see out of. Ours makes a fantastic travel vehicle, and we’ve driven from TX to VA a number of times, and took it to San Diego and back via the Grand Canyon. On long drives, we take one of the buckets out of the middle row to have enough room inside for coolers and stuff that we can access while on the road. I’m not looking forward to replacing it, since I’m not sure I can find anything as simple and robust. And, having the big automatic sliding doors makes it stupid easy to get your baby into their car seat.

Yes, I took a portrait of our van at White Sands. What an amazing place.
