I just wanna know what they drive and how’d they fit three kids into an EF Civic. Or you know, prevent someone in a suburban from steamrolling them at a stop light when the driver couldn’t see them over the hood.

I don’t give a rats ass about the Honda ad, but when I was a teen with two younger siblings mom had an 83 Corolla 2-door and dad had a 2-seater CRX. On the rare occasion we all had to go somewhere together we took my Caddy.

I’ll volunteer to be the leader of the Jello-picnic census bereau, that tracks down everyone and lists their cars after their screen name.

Well, let me reshoot it and there’s a “save the cat” moment for the EX - they call it back, and it goes in the garage for a high school car. But c’mon - this is a car ad, not a Jungian tract. Lighten up ....

how did they get either of those kids into a rear facing car seat in the back of an ancient 2 door hatch like that? And, I would expect the front seat position to be pretty uncomfortable in order to accommodate a rear facing seat.

I’m not mad, but it just didn’t make much sense to me for them to completely get rid of their old car. Sure they were getting the new CUV but that civic was presumably paid for and was in good shape. Why not keep it as a 2nd vehicle?

I’m not upset about the ad at all. What I’m saying is I doubt most of those people who are drive anything special. Most of the probably drive “beige” corollas or newer civics, but are loosing their minds over the ad.

My best guess would be mechanical issues. There’s that scene with it at the shop and the dad talking to the mechanic. Hopefully it just needed a timing belt job and they sold the car to future me who’ll do it and keep the car :)

I don’t begrudge someone for getting the kind of vehicle they want. I will say, though, that my mom had a 3rd gen Civic hatchback and two teenagers that were taller than her (and our stepdad) and somehow it wasn’t a problem.

But teenagers don’t need booster seats.

Fair enough, but when we were much younger and my mom and dad were still together they had a Beetle.

Anything can be special to anyone - one of my loves was an ‘88 Camry 5M wagon. Beige in the extreme ... but yeah. That EX was easy to love, not at all beige. I loved my ‘91 CRX Si. More personality, but worse gas mileage. And only two seat ....

I agree, what I’m trying to say is I doubt many of the people outraged over the ad would make the sacrifice they want the family in the ad to make. I’d bet most of them are either single or have a kid or two, but drive a much more modern and larger car than a 80's Civic. Because even an ‘08 Civic is a massive improvement over that, for family hauling.

Edit: what I meant by “special” earlier was, what would be considered an enthusiast’s car.

It’s ok, they sold it to someone who’s going to rice it and nearly destroy it. Then when the kids are older, the dad’s going to buy it back and fix it up!

NOPE, I DON’T LIKE THAT ENDING!!!

The lady was taking it away to put it in storage and the dad is going to fix it in any free time he gets while the daughter gets older, so he and her mum can give it to her restored when she passes her test and drives it to the prom.

Happier ending and no abused by ricers in the meantime.

I think there are a couple of reasons why this ad is getting the reaction that it is.

First, that Civic was from a time that many people consider Honda was really on their game. The cars were fun to drive, and they looked good.

Second, the girl’s reaction makes it sad.

Third, what value could the family have gotten for that Civic? Probably not much, if anything at all. It didn’t make sense to sell it. That household could have probably used a second car. Those of us on the east coast haven’t seen an ED Civic that clean in probably 15 years.

Now, you’re correct, from a safety standpoint that CRV is leaps above the ED Civic. Although no car will prevent someone from being steamrolled by an inattentive jackass in an SUV. I’d argue that the CRV is probably the wrong tool for the job. Not sure how much more room that they would get in that versus the Civic. They probably should have bought a Pilot or Odyssey.

For the record I don’t fault the family for buying the new car. I fault them for the choice of new car, and the fact that they probably traded the car in for nothing or a very minimal price, when it would have been better to keep it for a backup/second vehicle (you know, for when the Takata Deathbag™ gets recalled).

I can’t speak for others, but for me the issue is not just that they’re ditching the civic (three kids, one in a carseat, not gonna fit, I get it), but that they’re replacing it with the MOST BLAND OPTION POSSIBLE.

A literally beige, CVT-only crossover. Slide in a (regrettably) silver Accord 4 cylinder with a 6-speed stick. At least try to show some heart tissue survived the procedure.

But they don’t care about selling 3 pedal accords. They only want to sell beige CVT hatchbacks on stilts.

You allude to one of my issues with it - two little kids in the back of an unsafe car in the modern age. Even a car 10 years newer would be much safer. And belt those kids in.
