Anyone can see if I accidentally broke my ASS?

Kinja'd!!!

Details here... basically I don’t know why engine isn’t shutting off, but I can’t see what environmental factor is causing it.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

And of course the link got Kinja’d:

No it isn’t, I didn’t press the button and it defaults to Auto Stop Start activated.

PS: Title image isn’t my car, this is, I generally don’t disable Auto Shut Off.

I recommend buying cars with no computer, fixed.

The one with nearly no computers is returning in 2 weeks.

Well except the system isn’t disabled by the button... it’s just refusing to stop the engine.

Personally I’d leave it off. Does it really improve economy at all? Even so, I’d hate to put a starter motor through the task of cranking all day long. The only stop-start that I’d use myself is the purported air-start or excess fuel ignition systems that are in the works since they don’t require cranking all the time.

Cars with start/stop have heavier duty starters to account for the fact they are being used much more frequently.

I’m aware of that, but it’s still a bit of a drawback in my (perhaps simple-minded) thinking in that there’s a certain amount of risk involved everytime you have to turn an engine off and back on; that and I couldn’t get over the constant juddering and cranking—I think that starting an engine is kind of a sacred thing in my mind and while I know it probably seems dumb, doing it a ton of times dulls the appeal of essentially awakening something mechanical.

How do hybrids do it? I think it’s a much more pleasant system as the engine just whirrs on and off like an air conditioner rather than the true “heart” of the vehicle being constantly resurrected.

Have you checked what driving mode you’re in? My bmw disables start-stop if I’m not in comfort or Eco modes.

Also it may have stopped working if there’s a problem with the battery, starter/generator, or anything electrical. Maybe get your battery tested?

110% sure it works in all modes in mine, I’ve seen it shutting engine off even in Sport Plus. And I’m in Comfort mode all along.

I did consider battery, forgot to mention I also installed my dashcam, but there are no battery drain errors or anything, which is usually the first symptom for Canadian cars, especially when it’s cold.

Well more so I just want to make sure I didn’t break anything. I could code it “last mode” to keep it off, but that’s a different story.

Depends on the hybrid. Most hybrids, except for mild hybrids like early Honda IMA hybrids and GM eAssist and BAS systems, have the advantage that they can get rolling on electric, then worry about starting the engine. Non-hybrids (and mild hybrids) have to get the engine started to propel the car.

Purely parallel hybrids often have a starter motor, and just start the engine normally, rev match it if necessary (if rolling), then engage the engine-to-motor clutch. (This can take a while.) A few of them drop that clutch to get the engine started if rolling, instead, but that’s rather harsh.

A power split hybrid will, if the vehicle’s at a complete stop, dump power into motor-generator #1 to spin it at positive RPM, which will start the engine. However, often, it will start rolling on electric power from motor-generator #2, and MG1 is actually spending power to spin backwards and hold the engine still. So, starting the engine is a matter of stopping MG1, which allows the vehicle’s momentum to spin the engine (although if more power or speed is required, MG1 will power in the other direction). In either case, there’s a lot more power available to get the engine spinning, than there is in a conventional car.

A serial hybrid or a clutched serial hybrid will just dump power into its generator, spinning the engine. Works like a normal car, just that there’s a lot more power available, and it can happen at any time, not just at a stop.

Mine only works after putting the battery on a tender. Even if I drive it everyday, it only works the day after being on a tender. My battery’s health must not be 100%. The car can sit for 2 weeks, and crank no problem though. So it can’t be THAT bad.

Mine also will not use “ASS” when i’m in sports or sports+ mode. Only work in comfort and ECO plus.

*sees bimmer in the title and a picture of a keyless ignition* I’m not sure if this is a reference to me and my keyless problems or not.

I did at one point suspect it was my battery, trying to get ISTA-D installed now.

Other thing is I installed a dash cam with 6 hour recording after ignition off. No battery drain error, but could be using a bit of the battery enough to tip it over, for a 5 year old battery?

She is going on a charger in 2 weeks though.

Dashcam could be draining the battery just enough. I don’t know what BMW’s exact parameters are, but I would guess the battery has to be at 95% or better health. I can drive an hour on the highway and mine still won’t work when i exit. The alternator should of charged the battery in that time frame. One night on the tender though, and it works.
