“But supermarkets hire people to round up shopping carts so it’s okay”

No, supermarkets hire people to collect shopping carts from corrals and bring them back inside. They’re not shepherd dogs, for fucks sake.

Leaving carts in the middle of the lot makes them “Job Creators” don’t ya know? :)

That’s why in civilised countries you have to use a token or a 1€ coin to get a cart, which helps with the motivation to return it where it belongs.

Aldi does that here, it’s like a quarter but it’s the principle.

My one pet peeve about going to the supermarket. People are lazy and dumb sometimes.

My local Kroger is awful with this. People are shitty, but I blame most of it on the store, which provides zero cart returns for the central six rows of parking in front of the store:

It’s always a mess of abandoned carts in the lot (which of course encourages people to do likewise, since why be responsible when everyone else is an asshole? Kroger basically just lets them pile up out there and collects them at night. If they aren’t going to do better, they may as well just encourage people to load in front of the store like in old the days.

Almost every time I go shopping I’m pushing a cart in, because I don’t want it around my car, which often isn’t enough as there are two or three threatening carts around.

A lot of supermarkets and “big box” stores around here have the opposite problem. All the cart returns are in the rows closest to the store, from where actually bringing the cart to the building wouldn’t be much more effort. But the spaces a ways out have nothing nearby to encourge carts to be organized, so they are left strewn about even more.
