What parts do you keep in your car?

For me I just keep some small hose clamps, fuses, and a length of vacuum hose. I just keep them there because when I did have a vacuum leak, I kept the extra clamps and hose in the car. The fuses are pretty obvious, I think everyone should keep extra fuses in their car.

Not exactly spare parts, but tire plugs.

I had alignment shims in my glovebox until yesterday when I finally aligned the truck. Otherwise nothing.

I’ve got a funnel and a PCV valve.

Fuses, tire plugs, and duct tape.

...and I keep a roll of toilet paper in the trunk. I started doing this after I came home one day to find that someone had pooped on the side of my driveway (I live in a secluded area just off an Interstate Highway exit) and they apparently only had one napkin and a plastic bag to wipe with...

Kinja'd!!!

If you have to poop so bad that you stop at a stranger’s driveway in the woods and have to wipe with a plastic bag... you are having a bad day. My having to pick up the plastic bag and put it in the trash pales in comparison.

Always keep a roll of toilet paper in the car for “emergencies”.

Jeez I’m gonna feel bad seeing everybody’s responses (assuming it’s more normal here to carry spare parts...?) because I don’t carry any.

I have a roadside kit, Slime tire sealant kit (since I have no spare), and jumper cables. No actual parts though.

I basically have the kit that came with the car, and whatever I’ve been too lazy to take out of the trunk.

I don’t carry spare fuses though. In 14 years with this car, I’ve had one blown fuse, and if it were an important one, I’m sure I could have found something less so to switch with.

It’s not really a big deal. If you made a vin diagram of

-Repairs that can be made on the side of the road

-Problems that will make your car un-drivable

-Problems that’ll happen without any warning

There’s not going to be much that’s overlapped by all three.

I have a handful of small stuff like hose clamps, fuses, etc., a tstat, a driver’s side brake calliper (it’ll fit the other side too with some creative bleeding), an alternator, I’m down the spare starter because it turns out it didn’t work (found out the hard way) and I had a couple older (mostly junk) axle shafts but they went AWOL from the bed somewhere and I couldn’t say where or when... I suspect they were stolen but they may have just bounced out. Or actually I shoved them back into the spare d30 that I left at a friend’s place back in ‘Toba. I’ve also got a complete change of every fluid, filters, and bulbs, and a ujoint and a handful of extra lug nuts, and... Doing this by memory sucks.

Also the spare tire, 100' of 16awg wire and some spade terminals of both genders, a roll of gaff tape, a roll of this rescue take stuff someone gave me during the lemons rally, an older but still good serp belt, set of plugs and wires, also a rotor because it’s not the normal dizzy for a ‘91. Erm... Some random hoses... I’m sure I’ll think of more. Mm. A gallon can of gas that won’t be enough to get me out of the woods but will keep the engine and heat running for a while longer.

This stuff is mostly in the glove box and the tote in the bed.

No parts, just an air gauge and a set of jumper cables. Not even any tools (yeah, my wife is actually more prepared than I am, because she has a very basic tool set in her car).

Good point.

Hence the flat tire repair which would solidly fit in all three and probably the most common failure on the road if I have to imagine?

For everything else, there’s roadside assistance lol

All I’ve got are the car jack, a fire extinguisher, and a roadside emergency kit (which has jumper cables in it, some rope, some flares, and a bunch of first aid items).

Hoping you have a lug wrench in the car too because that jack will only be good as a blunt weapon otherwise :P

Kinja'd!!! "Axial" (axial)
04/09/2017 at 23:00, STARS: 1

It’s the jack that came with the car; it has a lug wrench built into it that also forms the lever used to actuate the jack.

I’m actually more concerned about the spare. I believe it is the original, making it 28 years old. :p
