I could be wrong, but I believe if we lose in regulation to the Jackets Boston moves back up because they hold the ROW tiebreaker, no? Isn’t Toronto only ahead of Boston because we’ve played less games?

“Maple Leaf”, as used to describe one of the players, is a proper noun. The collection of players makes it plural, and because that plural is of a proper noun, the correct plural is “Leafs” and not “leaves”.
You could potentially try and argue a “chicken or the egg” situation here, but either way it’s correct. If the players are first, each one is an individual “Maple Leaf”. If the team comes first, it was named in honour of the Maple Leaf Regiment... each soldier being a “Leaf” and the collection “Leafs”. Carrying the title over in the casual sense (Toronto Maple Leafs) makes a lot more sense than the formal (Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Team), and least from a modern POV.
On that note, since you bring up the Canadiens... It bore the names (English translations) “Canadian Athletic Club” and “Canadian Hockey Club”, which are similar in spirit to “Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Team”, before dropping most of the name to become the “Canadiens”. That’s a plural in the sense of players from “Club de hockey Canadien” rather than French for people of Canada, in the same way that “Leafs” refers to a collection of titled people rather than “leaves” of a tree. From a grammatical standpoint you are doing the same thing to each word.
