I have 24 hours in Frankfurt(just landed this morning), so I rented something we dont get back home, A ‘17 GTI Clubsport. Its got a DSG and a bunch of red accents and alcantara. So far, ive just done a little Autobahn run(pretty stable at 140mph..lol) and some city driving.. Probably going to try and find some fun backroads later tonight/tomorrow morning. AMA i guess.

Welcome in Europe-land. Awesome rental, I’m sure it will be fun on the backroads around Frankfurt. But you know which backroad you need to drive that on, right? This one:

The ‘Ring was a blast in the Twingo, so I’m sure it’s even better in a Clubsport.

I think the Twingo could do with an upswept spoiler like the clubsport and maybe some dive planes and a splitter at the front. Downforce YO!

Actually the spoiler of the Twingo is quite like that on the Clubsport, air passes between it and the car, and it is slightly higher than the roof. See, it’s basically a race car (if we leave the steel wheels, eco tires, and the fact that it is ridiculously underpowered out of consideration)

How’s the steering feel? I’ve heard it’s not great on the GTI.

Won’t let me edit, but I just want to add: compared to modern “shiboxes” I know it’s not going to be a lotus :)

As cool as that sounds, I think most rental companies void the ring

Had you considered making some offset racing stripes out of tape? Proven to make any car into a race car.

Ah, yes, I forgot about that.

Nah, that would give it too many stickers. I’ve once seen a Twingo that had the Boomerangs like I have, along with the offset stripes, it was just too much for the little car.

I hadn’t noticed the boomerangs! That would be too busy.

Does it really feel like it could overtake £1 million of cars in one lap of the Ring like they did on Top Gear?

Well, any quickish car driven by a good driver can overtake a bunch of badly driven supercars. Ive driven enough supercars to know this thing is nowhere near it’s fast as a McLaren or new Ferrari. Still very competent and quick though.

Yeah. This. Theres a ‘ring clause in the contract. Plus i dont have the time to head there.

Avis? I think they have some with Wiesbaden plates.

Be careful, I’ve read people have been blacklisted from rental fleets for taking cars to the Ring.

For that you have to rent the car in France... Unlike Brits or Germans, I never had a Nurburgring close in my contract.

Yep. Avis.

And yeah, definitely not going to the ring(I think I replied to another comment about it). I have no interest in putting a 35k euro GTI on my credit card...

Good idea. Even if you got zero excess coverage (I always do nowadays when renting abroad, peace of mind is nice - rental car companies in Europe are much more nitpicky than in NA), it would be voided at the Ring.
