At times, I wish I had gotten a 335is instead of the 328i

Kinja'd!!!

Something like this. There are times I wish I had a little more power at my disposal. I’m about to go rectify these thoughts by going for a nice Saturday drive in my weekend car.

Idk man, my co-worker just bought a 07 335i coupe(to be fair, it has some bolt on’s) and has had nonstop issues(thermostat, wastegate rattle, tuning stuff etc). The 335is is a great car, but the n54 has so many issues(that being said, it has incredible potential).

The 335is has the n55, and I believe there are less issues with those. Although, the n55 in my dad’s 135is had a VANOS issue at 32k.

My inde shop has got a dinan 335 as one of their loaners. It is silly fast! My wife got a ticket in it after she was behind the wheel for 3 minutes. I’ve heard this and that about the engine(s), but it is really fun to drive.

Why not get a tune?

As mentioned, the n5x, while full of power making potential, is not exactly reliable. For a daily, the 328 was the right choice.

Dont get me wrong, if I had to pick any one BMW post-e46/e39 Era, it would definitely be a 335 (or *maybe* a nice hardtop z4) but since you have an m3, something less high strung as a daily makes sense.

It does not have the N55 at all.... that was part of the big deal with it.

That said I’m at 33K and no issues so far. They fixed a lot of the issues that abound 07-08. 09+ were much better. That said when I changed my plugs I did have a fouled cylinder 1 and I’ll be getting the injectors replaced under extended warranty once it finally transitions from slightly rich to a misfire.

The 335is kept the N54 after the rest of the e90 platform switched to the N55. As the N55 was brand new, they weren’t comfy with cranking the power up on the newer engine.

I didn’t realize that the 335is retained the N54, I assumed that because the 135is has the N55, the 335is was the same way.

Because a tune on an N/A engine really isn’t worth anything. I’d have to put some different parts on it.

I would love a tuned 335, however I don’t have the money for two out of warranty performance BMWs.

I hit the redline in a tunnel today with the windows down and that V8 sounded glorious.

I mean, I know I made the right choice. I decided to try and be somewhat logical with my DD. Like you mentioned, since i do have the M3 it’s not like I needed the 335.

The sad thing is you get used to whatever power you have.

I’m like, “well my tuned 335 is only like 370ish hp to the wheels, but I don’t want to mess with tuning it to run on E85, or water/meth injection, or a bigger turbo, so I guess this will do.”

(An N54 with the twin turbos has more headroom but also more potential maintenance pitfalls. Single turbo N55 this is about where it tops out on pump gas and stock turbo.)
