Automotive Regrets?

I had planned to rent a fast happy-birthday-me car on Turo and enjoy the PCH today. Instead, I had to cancel my vacation day to work. None of the justifications in the world (“if I don’t, it hurts our ability to be around in 6 months”, “I’m a leader and need to be there”, etc) will make up for cancelling those plans. Maybe 30 is when you start making your list of regrets in life. I guess I can still do it again some time.

In fairness, the folks at work were great. My coworker brought me one of my favorite things (a greek salad), another gave me a birthday hug while wearing a bug mask, and my roomate conspired with my mother to get me my favorite cake.

PMJ’s cover of “I want you to want me” feels just right tonight. What automotive regrets do you have? Some PMJ to help you think,

I could have bought a Legacy 2.5 GT wagon for $5k a few years ago, but I wasn’t (and I’m still not) in a financially secure place to buy it.

Still haven’t done my east coast tour yet.

Oh, and I don’t have my own car yet.

Lots of automotive regrets.

My Ranger blew up in my parents’ driveway and I’ve regretted my inability to save it ever since. Loved that little truck.

About ten years ago when I was in college I came across a clownshoe M Coupe for sale for $14,000, less than 50,000 miles on the clock, full dealer service history, supposedly no accidents. But hell, I could barely afford toilet paper back then (part time on minimum wage ain’t no joke). OH WELL.

I sold the carcass of a wrecked car whole for pretty much nothing instead of parting it out and making a couple grand. Also could have had an RSX Type S for $5000...in 2011. Back when they were twice that.

Could have had a clean ‘86 Grand National for $3,500 back in 2001.

Not buying an air cooled 911 or NSX instead of my FR-S. They were low 20s in 2013 and I cross shopped them pretty hard, but ended up going with the hot new car thinking that values would stay about where they were at on the Porsche and Honda.

There was a sweet 65 corvette that sat on the market for @15 months at a stupid low price in 2009-2010 when all the toys flooded the market. couldn’t justify of blowing all my cash and not paying down loans I already had.

I sold an ‘86 CJ-7 with a factory 258, T-5 and D44 rear in daily driver condition to fund the rebuild of my XJ.
