This happens alot around here and people debate what’s best-locked door or unlocked door. I’m in the unlocked door camp I’ve seen my neighbors car doors peeled back like sardine cans because they locked their doors, but I’ve also had neighbors where the bear got into their car and the door shut behind them....turns out bears are really good at getting into cars not so good at getting out.
So my advice in bear country, First Never leave food in your car, don’t eat in your car, and Park with the front of your car facing downhill and doors unlocked. This way when the bear gets into your car the door swings and stays open.

Whenever we go backcountry camping in bear country my wife will want to get on the trail once our bags are packed and skip loading our extra food from our car into bear boxes because it usually means an extra drive/time and I’m always like “we don’t want to be that person who’s car gets ripped to shreds.”
I’ll have to keep in mind parking so doors stay open. We usually lock our doors when we are leaving our car in bear country.

If the bear wants in they’ll just rip the door off....but they at least you don’t have to worry about them getting stuck.

If this were an issue for me, I would not be debating whether to lock or unlock my car. I would be renting a Uhaul and calling a real estate agent to sell my house and find me one where there are no fricken bears.

Sounds like a prime opportunity for one of South Africa’s anti car theft companies to move in and make a killing. Once the first bear-beque steak is cooked, those critters will never want to touch a car again.

Or let’s just say Canada.. because up at the top the bears are just white.
My whole Province is red; BC. Bears flip garbage cans left out on our street,I run into them walking the dog a few times a year, friends in our neighbourhood had one help them unpack;
I’ve never heard of parking tricks specifically for bears - not even in the National Park which is a tourist trap..

Moved from Maine to Virginia as a kid. Was immediately instructed to keep eyes out for copperhead snakes and black widow spiders when playing in the woods. I’ll take the bears all day long.

We have the same issues with bears here in town....they are kinda everywhere. The parking trick is one of my own. I’ve had bears in my cars several times and as long as the doors stayed open never had any damage....neighbors down the street on the other had have had bears get locked in their cars and that’s a great way to gut an interior.
