My wife’s grandmother is coming to visit the us here in Houston from Mexico DF early next month. My wife doesn’t have here TX driver’s license yet but her grandmother does in Mexico DF. Since I work forever and always until I die, they want to go to various locations while i’m at work. Can her grandmother drive here in TX with a Mexican driver’s license? She has a 10 year visa and valid driver’s license. El Zapatito and El Moose both have full coverage insurance.

I have driven in both Canada and Mexico with my passport and CA driver’s licences...

I would imagine the licence is fine but you may have to check the smallprint of your insurance to make sure she’s covered. That tends to be the case, not sure if the US is the same.

Yes. There’s a agreement between Usa/Mexico/Canada about being able to drive in one another. My understanding is as long as you have a valid visa/passport and a valid drivers license from you country of origin you can drive in the states. I would call insurance and verify that she would be covered as a driver is she takes your car

The US recognizes foreign driver’s licenses, but apparently some states want a summary version (IDP) to be carried as issued by the foreigner’s government so all the info is on spec and organized for easy digest. I don’t imagine Texas would be one for Mexican licenses, but I could be wrong.

People who drive in the U.S. must have a valid driver’s license. Some states require an International Driving Permit (IDP) from foreign nationals, in addition to a valid license from your own country. Check with the motor vehicle department of each state you will drive in for its requirements.

Texas does not require an IDP, so yes. Your grandmother in law should be OK to drive in Texas with her Mexican driver license.

Edit: as “Car Guy, Twingo Tamer-About to Conquer Europe in the Name of Twingo” pointed out, make sure she has insurance that is also valid in the USA.

Google says she can use her Mexico license to drive for 90 days in TX before she needs to do something more formal about it.

(I am not an immigration or traffic attorney. I am a guy who typed “mexico driver license valid in texas” into google.)

benjrblant confirmed that TX doesn’t ask for that IDP. I wonder which states do?

I wonder if it’s technically true to be able to drive to France (territory) from the US

I learned, when visiting Louisiana quite a while ago, that an “International Driver’s License” for Europeans was needed. A friend living in Wichita though claimed not to use it as waving with a foreign driver’s license often made Highway Patrol/State Troopers send you of with a warning instead of filling out all the paperwork. Was caught speeding once, kept the international license I did get in my bag and guess what happened? “Got to check that speedometer a bit better son. Of you go!” True story. Over 10 years ago though ;-)

something about a territory in Canada that is considered France, French currency and laws. Not an embassy but actual French land per territory reasons

Get an International Driver permit, isn’t hard to get in my country, not sure about Mexico.. You can drive in the US upto a year with one.

Something like that happened to me in California. Got stopped by the constabulary for travelling at a speed higher than the remarkably low limit. They were a bit puzzled by a foreign licence and had the idea that I needed an international driving permit. I told them I didn’t. They then got distracted by a call on their radio and decided that it was all too much trouble, told me that if they did take it further it would cause me trouble getting into the country again and went on their way.

I went through this a few years ago when my parents visited from New Zealand – my insurer (State Farm) told me that they do indeed still fall under the “Covers whoever is driving” category. Definitely better safe than sorry as far as checking goes, though!

There is a French Island, St-Pierre and Miquelon off the coast of Canada. As I understand you can’t drive there or even take your car there unless you are from there.

Visit yes, take and drive your car, no.

There are a few French Islands in the Caribbean.

You can get there via ferry from Canada and there is a small airport which I don’t know if you’ll get access to from America directly.

But Canada is bound to be on you bucket list too right.

You been to the Virgin Islands? Namely the American Virgin Islands.

Kinja'd!!!

Drive in an American territory on the left hand side (most cars in USVI and BVI are LHD, because it’s cheaper to get the cars from the U.S. than it is to import them RHD from elsewhere).

Doesn’t American Samoa still drive on the right while Samoa changed very recently to driving on the left?

It’s interesting how different countries integrate national dress into uniform code.

The Vuhl looks badass! But also, its grill makes it look super excited just to be a car lol

I know that Indians can drive in America with an Indian license (no additional international permit) for up to 6 months. If that is extended to Mexican citizens also, it will save you the trouble to get one.

Then again, I don’t know how well officers understand the legality of licenses with different countries. Its safer to just get one even if you don’t need it.
