I don't know who funds prescription discount cards

But they deserve a hug. My health insurance (Anthem flavored ACA policy) has decided that they’re not going to properly cover the Basal insulin that has helped me get my numbers back in check.

Kinja'd!!!

What do I mean by not properly cover? Well on top of the 700 I pay for my coverage every month, this one prescription (out of 4 that I need for my diabetes) would cost me another 200 every month. Oh, and the other two alternatives that are on that level are covered in just about the same way. So what do they cover?

Well they cover something that I started taking 10 years ago. I was on this shit up until about 2 years ago, and my average blood sugar was almost double what it should have been for most of that time. The reason? Basal insulin is supposed to last evenly through the day, and this shit spikes 2 hours in, and only lasts 21-22 hours. Long story short, life was a roller coaster and being high was the only safe option to prevent random lows.

Everything came to a head last night. I had the worst low I’ve ever had. I felt like I could die for 2 hours straight (when your blood sugars are low, your body goes into a survival mode and tells you to eat everything you can get to). Then everything hit me at once. I’m sure my blood sugars jumped 200 points in the course of 5 minutes. Then I hurled for several minutes after.

Long story short we got a card in the mail yesterday to discount the stuff I was on that works down to a realistic and achievable number. I don’t know who funds these things but I wish I could hug them. Because my life depends on what they do.

The pharmaceutical companies fund them as a roundabout way to justify charging ridiculous prices (YAY FREE MARKET! WE CAN GOUGE PEOPLE FOR MEDICINE THEY LITERALLY CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT! THEY’RE NOT PAYING FOR IT ANYWAY, THEIR INSURANCE IS! EXCEPT THEY ARE PAYING FOR IT BECAUSE INSURANCE DOESN’T PAY FOR ANYTHING ANYMORE! I’M BUYING A NEW YACHT!) but then say “well if someone needs access to the drug and has financial hardship we can get them a discount.”

Ouch. ACA plans are such a mixed bag.

We just found out that my wife’s covers dental. We totally didn’t expect that and just paid for a dental visit for her out of pocket, so we’re looking at getting that run through insurance.

Of course, the cost went from a bit over $200/month last year to $345/month this year, so anything that helps cut expenses is helpful.

I mean I didn’t have to identify other than a name and email. Anybody can get the card. And if it takes an end around to only pay $10 to get my prescription then I’m okay with it.

Should probably just move to Canada. My Fiance is diabetic (Type 1) and gets it covered.

ACA plans are a mixed bag for 2 simple reasons:

Health insurance companies are good at fucking everyone over.

Republicans have blocked or undermined several parts of the ACA that would have stabilized premiums at a lower level and coverage at a higher level :

Several Republican-controlled states sued to allow themselves to opt out of the Medicaid expansion part of the ACA, because the federal government would “only” cover 90% of the cost and the states have to kick in 10%

House Republicans sued the Obama administration to block Section 1402 of the ACA which would have paid for waivers to insurance companies which would reduce premiums and deductibles of roughly 7 million people

Marco Rubio slipped a rider into a spending bill to block Section 1342 of the ACA that would have reimbursed insurers for many of the financial losses they experienced selling ACA plans.

Ours went up $150 a month and our prescription coverages dropped significantly. Needless to say, I’ve lost all faith in our plan.

It’s time for single payer. Insurance companies add little to no value to the healthcare market in the best case, and in the worst cases, they’re hard to discern from actual evil. Why are we as a nation allowing predatory entities to profit off the illnesses of our fellow citizens?

I know it’s easy to get but the point is that the pharma companies charge ridiculous top-line prices that drive up everyone’s costs of insurance and care. You as an individual might get the card but all the people whose prescription coverage does pay for this drug, their insurance companies are paying the ridiculous price and pass the cost on to consumers in the form of higher premiums.

Oh but don’t you know? This shit is supposed to be the same as the Canadian system.

So true. The JDRF is trying to fight the high cost of insulin (yes I know there’s other prescriptions that cost too much also). And I’m hoping they win so we can set the precedent for all preacription drugs.

I would add that they are making the system worse. Mainly because it adds another layer to inflate numbers. Nobody pays fulls price so everyone jacks up the prices to be negotiated down. https://www.forbes.com/sites/capitalone/2017/02/24/3-easy-ways-to-earn-more-credit-card-rewards/#18931a34229c

Not always enough unfortunately, my wife was on a really great antidepressant and was doing really for the trial month and then we went to fill the prescription and it was $350 a month, the discount card only dropped it to $200 and we still couldn’t afford it, so she went off it cold turkey and ended up in the ER, which I’m sure will end up costing us at least $200/month plus she still needs a new medication. This is why I honestly want to leave the country, every damn system just seems so beyond help or reform, inusrance, healthcare, police, infrastructure, government, transportation, everything. My inhalers are almost $100 a month here and that’s just to breathe, everywhere else in the world they’re like $5.

Yeah it really does seem like everybody is out to get you coming and going. Part of why I became a mechanic, one less person to try to fuck me.
