Kinja'd!!!

If you have just found a passion for cars or simply want to know more, you have come to the right place. I am going to give you a head start on the chatter car guys throw around at the local Mustang launch.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Our first word is Dogleg. NOTE: some cars may not have a Dogleg and it has many definitions . We are focusing on an exterior part of a 4 door vehicle. Wikipedia states:

The area behind the rear door on a four-door car. This area is part of the quarter panel just behind the door and in front of the rear wheel house.

Kinja'd!!!

Now go quiz a car salesman, mechanic, or car guy and see if he can show you the dogleg. Be careful with phrasing. Quiz 1: Find a dogleg and post it here.

Automotive design rule: when making a lifted, cladded wagon, make sure the cladding stays on the dogleg and doesn’t creep onto THE REAR DOOR

In this post, RamblinRover spergs about ‘63 Galaxies. You see the little chrome doohickey at the back edge of the rear door here?

Kinja'd!!!

It only exists on the Galaxie four-door hardtop - not the normal hardtop, not the fastback, not the normal sedan. It is only there because the larger glass needed to close the missing door pillar gap and the need to move forward mean that the glass has to have a notch to go into the door right. Ford’s solution for the notch? A CHROME TRIANGLE - GENIUS.

This is a dogleg, because dogleg = transmission with first gear down and to the left , for easier shifting between 2nd & 3rd gears, because racecar.

Kinja'd!!!

The shenanigans started in 1957 - ‘56 was the first year for a pillarless, and the body change in ‘57 came with a bigger door opening. The impale-yourself triangle was present all the way up until ‘64, though ‘63 was the last year of it being chrome.

Kinja'd!!!

1965 - silly triangle finally missing:

It must have been well regarded by management for them to keep doing something that goofy through eight model years. The original reason is a pretty good one, too - you don’t want a big door with a small opening and hard access with a limited roofline, it’s just dumb.

Kinja'd!!!

‘56 (last without triangle) - clearly not easy to get into the back. At all. That, and I imagine that the seal at the base of the C-pillar was a PITA for leaks.

The ‘65 just goes back to having a short door, short aperture, more upright door opening. Boring -though the ‘60-’64 had already shortened the door without harming access by making the short door open wider.

The lack of a dogleg also explains why some concept cars and renders look so unrealistic.
