I even had a neat addition to it. Oh well. I assume my reply will rise from its slumber when the main post does.. or will it? I don’t recall what sending the post back to draft does.

I don’t know. It didn’t go along with the post when I changed the post date. Was yours about the Lafayette Escadrille? If so, I’d like to hear it. Or you can wait three weeks.

People bitch about Kinja, but the ability to work three weeks ahead is absolutely brilliant. I couldn’t do this if I had to post the day of.

Kinja'd!!!

I’ll more or less repost it here, an excerpt from Lafayette Escadrille: America’s Most Famous Squadron. Henry Venable Bell was a relative of mine - although he later became estranged from his family and I think had some issues with alcohol. I’d been told he was in the Escadrille, but he didn’t show up on a list of pilots on the Wikipedia page - being Ops would certainly explain that! Even now, “henry bell” and “lafayette escadrille” only show up together in three places on the internet, one being the Google Books entry above and another being a list on Wiki of personnel of the 103rd, formed from the Escadrille. As a side note, I think the plane is a SPAD XIII.

That’s pretty cool, and yes, I think that’s an XIII. I just wrote about that plane the other day.

That’s about the earliest family contact with aviation of which I’m aware. My grandfather was good friends with a ‘30s cropdusting pioneer named Olin “Pappy” Longcoy (who I believe had a Senior Skyrocket ), which would be second furthest back. Still, I don’t know how many pictures we even have of Henry Bell, so having discovered that one today (!) I need to forward it to my dad and grandmother posthaste.
