Yesterday I got my AEM dryflow filter in the mail from Amazon. It was around $30 where the Mazda replacement is about $20 and no name brands range from $10-20ish. I popped my hood, took out the old filter, and put in the new filter. No issues at all. I started the car and let it idle to make sure there were no leaks and I blipped the throttle a few times for funsies. I shut it down and went inside to care for my pups.
So far I’ve put about 70 miles on it today and here are my thoughts.
Sound: with the hood up and my door open I could hear a little induction whoosh when I blipped the throttle. Normal driving with windows up and radio on? Nada. It’s warming up today so there will be Windows down driving soon so I’ll probably hear a smidge.
POOOOOOWWWWWWAAAAAAARRRRRR: meh. Pretty sure it’s just #placeboeffect but it does feel a little quicker on acceleration. Or at least a little smoother. Pretty sure it’s all in my head but more likely if there is any difference, I’ll explain why after the next section.
Fuel economy: improvement. There was an average one mpg improvement for the length of my morning drive. But, small sample size with a ton of variables.
I think there’s a better explanation as to why that most people know already:
It’s a new filter. It’s more important than who makes it or the materials or design. I’m no longer running on a dirty old filter. It would probably feel the same if I just replaced it with a normal filter. Clean filter is good filter.
What I’m looking forward to is only having to clean it as opposed to spending $20ish bucks every 20k miles or so.
In high school I had many friends that had different intakes and filters. Most had no change except some induction noise. Many had worse performance either in power or gas mileage. Occasionally the cheap eBay shorties and cone filters thrown on were so poorly made the car ran too rough and just had to throw the stuff in the trash. So I was weary. So far so good though. Now to put on the stickers for more HP

In a nutshell. That said it’s supposed to keep it’s flow a lot longer than your typical “performance filter”. I’m due for a clean ASAP, but it’s been ~16,000 km, all good. Also you aren’t done yet. You need the AEM cleaner, after that you can start enjoying the “clean rather than buy” fun.
All in all I call it worthwhile
