Regal GS might have a V-6, may actually be sporty.

TTAC has an article out about a slip-up on Buick’s website that seems to indicate we will be getting a GS model and it will be available with the V-6. Probably only in Sportback configuration. This would be a welcome change to the GS trim since the current version is basically an appearance package.

If they actually do this, I’ll have to add Buick to my shopping list next spring.

Really? You think the current GS is just an appearance package? It has a much more powerful engine than the other trim levels (260 or 280 vs. 200 or 210) and a much more aggressive suspension tuning than the other turbo trim levels.

Maybe only in Canada it’s a trim package? But I doubt that...

And I highly doubt they’d up-size the engine. Maybe a sporty lacross would have a V6. But I can’t see the regal getting a V6 at this point.

Agreed. They will probably push this off until 2019 since GM loves to screw up a product launch...

Yes, it’s clear you hate GM. Now that we have that out of the way, perhaps you can allow the rest of us to have an adult conversation about a car that enthusiast might actually buy.

I know that it’s more than JUST an appearance package, but it didn’t bring enough performance to the table to justify the GS nameplate. In reality, the base Regal was underpowered, and the GS trim level corrected that.

And the Opel sale is just the sort of excuse they’ll be looking for.

I don’t think the sale will kill this, but I worry that the sale will make GM less enthusiastic about the car, and the end result will be less marketing support.

Seriously though, this would be everything I want in my next car, except for a 3rd pedal.

I guess I’m not as worried about the Opel sale as most. I don’t think it will have any effect on the current model since it’s already in production. If it was still in pre-production, that would be a different story. The real issue is what will they do with the next gen, which I think will end up back in North America.

“basically an appearance package”

I feel like Brembo brakes and the HiPer strut suspension are more than part of an appearance package.

I don’t “hate” GM, I hate the stupid decisions they make, their lack of self-awareness, the smugness of Mark Reuss who claims to be a car guy, but doesn’t have a clue about cars, or car people.

There are lots of good GM products out there (Corvette, Silverado, Colorado, Cruze Hatch, Camaro, ATS, CTS, CT6, and even the Sonic isn’t horrible, if under-powered like the Cruze) and there are plenty of great GM engineers out there. I’ve been working on this Buick for months, and its a crap can, GME has botched a few things on the engineering side, and the power-train that the US is getting is boring. Same old GM.

The GS has the same 2.0L turbo that is available on every single other Regal trim except the base 1SV model. Same power.

May I ask where your hatred for the GM Europe engineers stems from?

Eh, I don’t think Buick is trying to make the GS name mean a fire breathing monster of a car like the cadillac V series. I thought the GS was more of a “Grand Tourer” proper badge where you get responsive handling and some more oomph but also the luxury features and comforts for long trips. A friend of mine had a regal GS for a weekend test drive and damn, that thing had legs.

That being said, I maintain that I think there was some kind of mistake there. I don’t see them fitting a V6 to the regal GS unless there is another V6 somehow in that chassis. To my knowledge, epsilon and E2XX all only have I-4s in short wheelbase form. If it happens, awesome, but it’s unlikely from a historic standpoint.

Listen, I do work for the US Navy and have dealt with some REALLY incompetent engineers. That doesn’t make the whole Navy a shitshow, or even the specific boats they worked on bad vessels. You are calling a car a “crap can” before anyone has driven it.

I think they are adding the V-6 to this chassis to appease the Aussies, since it’s the Commodore replacement.

No. The turbo trms have the 2.0L engine with 220 hp/260 lb ft (currently) while the GS gets the high output variant with 270 hp/295 lb ft. The HO version is GS only.

You know how lots of small flaws can be just as bad as one major flaw? That’s the case here. I wanted to like this car, I really, really did. Hell, I was excited when I found out I was working on a GM wagon. Then the details came in and ruined my excitement for it. And no I don’t want a 10 second quarter mile, track day wagon. But at least something that doesn’t make my SHO feel like it is orders of magnitude faster. A respectably quick DD. And we aren’t getting that.

The crash validation for the non-lifted wagon without the stupid plastic body cladding would have been the exact same. They could offer that car here, no problem. Except GM is too stupid to realize that it costs them literally nothing to sell that one here too, I’d argue there is more of a market for the actual wagon than the wanna be Outback. As far as the OPC version goes, yeah the EPA validation would cause some more incurred costs. But do they really think there is 0 market for a Hi-po Buick?

I agree. I was half joking about the sale earlier. No question that the sale agreement covers the manufacture and sale of the cars.

Longer term though, it changes the profit margins for GM, which can affect decisions on trim levels, engine options, etc.

Buick’s website clearly states the 2.0L has 259HP and 295lb-ft of torque. You’re numbers are from about 5 years ago or so.

Yeah but how many have you seen? And suspension mods are great if the car is worth it. That 2.0T has been around since 2005 and has been passed in performance by other mid sizes. For example look at the Accord V6 sedan or Acura TLX, both mid size and one is possible with AWD, both do 0-60 in less than 6 seconds ( Accord 5.7s and TLX 5.8s ), the best the GS AWD could do is 6.2 seconds . So that means some one in a base V6 accord that cost 7k less could pull up and dust it. Not to mention the accord is also praised for its sporty chassis .

My numbers are from 2014, I think. I see that now that the newest regals are like this but the high output used to be GS exclusive. I guess when they ditched the manual they just gave all of them the HO motor too? This makes the OP make more sense since it used to be special for the majority of the but now isn’t.

And I just looked it up and they gave the GS a power DECREASE in the 2014/2015 changeover and gave the rest of the trims a power INCREASE. Okay, well that’s 5 different versions of dumb, but it appears I am caught up now.

True - the GS trim came with the 270hp, and the lesser Regal Turbo had the lukewarm engine. Then in 2015 I think they re-rated the engine for 259hp.
