Kinja'd!!!

Right. Canadian Spring means chance of snow up until May 2-4. At least it’ll be 20 degrees next week. Happy Friday!

We got 3" of snow on Saturday. Maine spring sounds a lot like Canadian spring.

Spring doesn’t happen until May. This is that in-between season I like to call “breakup”, as in when the snow starts melting and the ice on the rivers and lakes breaks up and moves out. Spring isn’t until it quits freezing at night and the ground dries up, generally mid May to early June. I’ve seen snow every month of the year so it’s not like it’s a good indication of any kind.

This is the in-between season I like to call “shit”. It comes between winter and summer.

“WHERE THE FUCK WAS THIS 2 MONTHS AGO!?!?!?”

I hate spring. I hate spring even more after a winter like this one.

I can’t believe how warm it’s supposed to get over the next few days. Up to 75 freedom degrees in Detroit on Monday (it’s in the 30s right now).

I hope those little trees don’t get too much larger, going to be some turf war for the roots.

Nice 1960s house, approximate value in a laundered money market, one billion dollars.

There are houses in our neighbourhood going for three or four million, so you’re not far off.

I can believe it. And the money is 100% on the up and up, of course.

I went to an estate sale in Vancouver last weekend, at this house:

Land value only, good but not the greatest area, sad in that the house had lovely old finishes which will mostly be sent to the landfill. It’s insane in Seattle right now, but not quite to north of the border levels, yet.

Oh yeah, that poor old thing is a goner. Surely to be replaced with some thrown together mcmansion crap. Can’t let surrey have all the tacky big houses.

A friend of mine just rescued a bunch of brick for his fireplace from a 7000 sq ft 1920 mansion in north van, getting totally gutted of its pristine, original interior. Gorgeous wood paneling piled in the front yard, making way for drywall and mdf.

The house itself is a common old middle class bungalow, but the finishes were remarkable to me. Inlaid (!) hardwood floors throughout, leaded glass, built-ins, huge amounts of wood trim, large brick and tile mantle. Even at high price points, that stuff just isn’t able to be duplicated with any quality today. I know what you mean by Surrey, too, I drove through there on the way up, it’s the Canadian version of southern American mcmansions (aka they cost 5x as much)

Sad about that gutted house, and how irreplaceable material ends up in the skip. In the town where my mom lives, the same thing happened. A beautiful ca. 1910 Georgian style mansion had been in the same family for eons, perfectly preserved down to original glazing and a huge monkey puzzle tree in the front yard. It sold around 2005 (height of mcmansion crap), the new owners removed the tree, gutted the house, added tacky additions, ruined it. You can’t really reverse that. It’s like chopping and channeling a 540K and putting a Chevy 350 in it.

Oh wow, that is really surprising for one of those. Too bad it won’t be there much longer, but one can hope.

Damn, that is disappointing too. Yeah, practically irreversible. I don’t get people.

Yeah, it’s not the greatest. ‘Toba’s usually underwater for the most part.
