After a frustrating evening earlier this week , I had some success in last night’s mechanical mayhem. Behold, the ghettobarrow:

Kinja'd!!!

The new tire was quite a bit smaller than the old, but hey, at $14, it’s hard to complain (although there was a $4 environmental fee on it... because it’s a tire). Especially because I got the wheelbarrow for free, I didn’t feel like dumping much more than that into it. So the only thing I had kicking around to make a new axle for it... a piece of rebar. I brought out the bench grinder and had at it, and ground it down small enough to fit into the existing hole. I hacksawed the ends of the bar with the intention of splitting the ends open so that the bar can’t be easily pulled out, but after hammering the thing into place, it seems to be holding.

A total hackjob, that I’m sure I’ll need to eventually revisit, but hey, it works now!

Bet it handles better now that it’s lowered. Fact my wife once pulled into the garage and ran into the wheelbarrow wedging it between the wall and the bumper. The handle pierced right through the bumper the barrow was fine...

Wheelbarrows with solid tires. Only way to roll man, only way to roll.

The solid tire was more than double the price, though.

I almost debating making a solid wood wheel... :P

No, it wasn’t a matter of chickening out. My wife was already near the store where the tire was on sale, and if it would have failed, I would have had to have gone there anyway.

I’m curious - how did you end up fixing it/getting it fixed?

I did a little thing that I do not suggest called making your wife drive around with a busted bumper until you sold the car for a thousands less than it was worth due to the damage.. sold it 3 years ago a 2002 Nissan Altima S with 80,000 miles for $2,000.00 bucks. It had some other rust belt related issues. Once we moved to nc I ditched all salt riddled cars and bought some southern cars.
