Multiple news outlets are reporting that an airstrike has been launched against an airfield near Homs, Syria.
Reports vary, but over 50-70 Tomahawk missiles were launched from U.S warships at the al- Shayrat airfield. No fixed wing aircraft were used.
The attack was launched in response to a chemical weapons attack by the Assad regime earlier this week. The Associated Press is reporting President Donald Trump has said the operation was vital to American national security.

Members of the Russian military were stationed at the airfield but were warned prior to the attack, according to journalist Paul McLeary.

Trump is expected to address the nation at some point shortly, followed by a briefing from Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and NSA Chief H.R. McMaster.

We’ve already spent $11.2 billion on Tomahawks so far. Using $80 million worth to deter Assad from another chemical attack is a drop in the bucket and better than them sitting on the shelf getting closer to expiring, IMO. Tomahawks are a relatively modern, high-precision cruise missile that hit their targets with incrieble accuracy. Since they are launched from off-shore they put no US lives at direct risk and they tend to hit what they are supposed to without collateral or civilian casualties when they are launched at military targets. In that respect, $80 million seems like a hell of deal as insurance compared to the potential fallout of using an aircraft to dump dumb bombs.

Quick few second update (bump if you want), I’ve been monitoring a live feed of this story:
- Assad says the attack is encouraging them to fight to further end violence in the region. (Yeah, sure)
- Assad’s office says there will be no retaliation.
- Putin’s not happy because Trump didn’t get Congressional approval.
- China said “everyone calm down”.
- Only 20 missiles made it, the other 30 were supposedly shot down or otherwise lost.
- Estimated 9 civvies died in the attack.
My feelings? It seems kinda weird how “meh” Assad kinda is after this. I mean, this isn’t our first airstrike against Syria and from the sounds of it, we weren’t even that successful.
