I know there is a catch 22 to the whole ad blocker situation, but sites that completely lock you out are dead to me. It’s such a bad look. Too bad there aren’t any other sites that have similar information...

NADA is the same thing basically and no Ad Block nonsense.

I don’t think it’s that bad of a look. They aren’t charging you to use the site, so I don’t have a problem turning off Adblock in cases like this. If it were a site where I was already paying for access it’d be a different story.

Yeah I stopped using KBB for this reason. Sorry I’m not sorry.

Give this list a shot in your ad blocker.

Some sites that do this I will pause adblock, if I actually care about the site and their ads are relatively unobtrusive. But others where it’s just random clickbait that I don’t actually care about, or their ads are out of control, I can usually just decide to quit viewing those sites. The internet is a big place.

I wish there was a way to convey that i can tolerate non intrusive ads that just kinda sit there. Its the ones that load after the fact so you misclick, the ones that play automatically when you just wanted to gain 2 seconds of information, the misleading ones disguised as content, and the ones that just generally get in your way.

Id be less likely to clearcut turn off all ads if i didnt have that to deal with.

I think it looks terrible. “puh puh please turn off your ad blocker...” No thanks, fix your clownshit site.

I don’t have a problem with the sites that suggest a better experience by turning off your ad blocker. The ones that lock you out completely are a joke.

Advertising is one of their revenue streams. What’s so bad about that? Do you get mad when there are billboards on the side of the road?

I’m with you. I know this is the majority of the way they make money, but at if we didn’t have full page, auto play video ads or, worse yet, ads that are infected with malware we wouldn’t be here.

Also AdBlock offer a set of guidelines that allow advertisers to get whitelisted so... Their move.

Roadside billboards don’t hack my car (yet). Until websites and ad companies start actually policing who they’ll let on their networks, I’m shutting them out. One infection was enough.

Nope, but it bothers me in a browser. If the only way they can make money is to force people to not use an add blocker, then I will go elsewhere. So will 90% of others which is why it’s a bad move for most companies.

Eh, I’ve never found KBB to be a great resource anyway. At least for the kind of cars I buy(old, cheap and interesting) they wildly underestimate the price because a 20-year-old car is a 20-year-old car to them

I’m well aware that most websites make money from advertising, but not every site bothers you about an ad blocker. Even still, some of the ones that do just mention that you experience would be better without an ad blocker, which is totally fine.

The sites that lock you out completely are dumb. Their competition isn’t doing it I know because those are the sites I use now.

I know there is a catch 22 to the whole ad blocker situation

The way I see it, if I’m viewing a site run/owned by a corporation or a mega YouTuber, yeah screw that I’m not turning off my blocker. However, if we’re talking the small guys, independent media, indies, etc, oh yeah I’ll whitelist them. :)

I also use my blocker on car forums...for whatever reason some of them have so many ads that they’ll even crash some of the fastest phones/computers.

Totally agree, you even have to for a lot of e commerce sites if you want to be able to get to the checkout.

However I have found that it is mostly the gigantic corporations that are blocking access.

It’s entirely reasonable for them to ask to turn off ad blockers (it would be better if they committed to not running low quality ads). However, when I see these, it is going to make me question whether I actually want to view the site, and normally the answer is no.

It would be interesting to know what their bounce rate from these things are.

It really depends on the reason for pricing. I think banks go with nada and insurance and the like goes with KBB.

Adblock isn’t quite so nice about whitelists I don’t think? Aren’t they also taking a cut?

Regardless you are right that the fact that ads are frequently far to aggressive, and occasionally a vector for malware has gotten us here.

doesn’t matter anyway, KBB consumer numbers are so far off the dealer books they might as well stop having consumer numbers. I find that Edmunds comes closest to dealer books than NADA and KBB.

Yep, I do let them show their “non-intrusive” ads, because I do want the sites I read to make money, but some of them (like the kinja-verse) host plenty of bad ads as well.

I agree, Edmunds has been my fav for a while. However when I get close to making a purchase I like to run em’ all just for kicks. I like to print the KBB numbers when I’m trading in lol

Well I don’t want to get into mega corp vs small guy debates...

I think ads are fair, someone has to get paid, so I run my adblocker in blacklist mode. I’ll display ads, but if they start getting obnoxious like full screen, timed blackout, auto play videos WITH AUDIO, or spreading malware, they go straight into my blacklist.

Use incognito mode on those sites then. At least they can’t put targeted ads on your browser afterwards.

Semi related but how does KBB do with new car prices? Are they within the realm of reality? They have a really good break down of all the costs and even give you an OTD price.

couldn’t really say as I don’t really use any of them for new. For used all of the dealers I service use Black Book, NADA and regional auction numbers.

it doesn’t matter really as it won’t do much. They are only going to give you so much, no matter what you have in hand...it just makes the process harder and longer. The only time I see dealers give all the money for a car is if they know it will sell quickly and for all the money. Otherwise, if you are getting a few $ over what they normally would give, it’s if they are intent to make a deal or can hide it in the numbers.

I’ve found that if you walk you’ll find out exactly how much they are willing to give for your car and what they are willing to take for theirs. Luckily I don’t have to play that tactic...but every now and then if I’m looking for something very specific I find myself at dealers I don’t service. I go with insider knowledge and do walk if they aren’t meeting my price expectations...to which I do consider their costs. That’s when you get a day after call or sometimes they break before you get to your car.

In defense of dealers, they spend quite a bit on reconditioning to sell that trade in. I see many complaints about what they give vs. what they list the same car. But they have to recondition the car to certain mechanical standards, legally. They also spend quite a bit on cosmetics, advertising and paying the sales staff. Add transportation plus auction fees if not a trade. That all costs...and they can’t remain open if they can’t make a dollar.
