Kinja'd!!!

The new Civic Si has been flying under the radar since it’s not a Civic Type-R, but Honda just officially announced it. You can’t get it as a hatch, because the hatch is built in England and the Si is exclusive to the US market. So we can have a sedan or coupe. But it’s got some interesting stuff!

Higher-tune version of the 1.5 liter turbo motor from the Civic, now with 205 hp and 192 lb/ft of torque

6-speed close ratio manual transmission with helical LSD; no automatic option whatsoever

2-mode adaptive dampers with stiffer springs and sway bars

Variable ratio steering rack

Larger front brakes

Exterior trim bits ‘n bobs like a black grille, spoilers, center exit exhaust & wheels

“Sporty” interior touches like aluminum & carbon fiber trim, red gauge/button lighting & red stitching

Fantastic-looking seats

Standard equipment equal to a Civic EX-T (no word yet on if you can add features from the EX-L or Touring)

Overall, not a bad package for the mid-$20k price range it’ll fall into. It’s down on power compared to the likes of the Focus ST and VW GTI but the adaptive shocks and LSD could make for very entertaining (for fwd) handling.

An Si coupe (in red, or maybe blue) would be an nice daily driver provided that the wing was not there.

And this motor is quite capable. People are able to pull 280wtq and 240whp out of mechanically stock base model Civic Xs

Not bad, but seems a little down on power. 200 hp is acceptable with a hilarious redline, but if you’re going turbo blaaah power delivery you gotta have the power and torque to make it worth it.

Ugh, that ass. The one thing I really hate about this car.

Yeah, it is a bit down on power.

The closest equivalent is the GTI Sport which has 220 hp and an LSD for $28k. But to get active shocks you need to get the GTI Autobahn for $34k.

The Focus ST has 252 hp and starts just below $25k but it has an open diff with brake-based “torque vectoring.”

There’s also a base WRX for $27k but not as refined maybe.

I generally am not a fan of the styling of this generation of Civic. It’s...clumsy.

Yeah, i mean its not awful, but it’ll be way slower than the GTi (all the torques) or the Focus. Now, that’s not the end of the world, i’ll take handling over straight line speed personally, but it makes the car a little harder to justify. Especially with the Type R being so crazy, they have lots of room for hp without stepping on Type R toes.

I think with the Si being unique to the US market, and the new 2.0 turbo being for the CTR, Honda USA had to work with the 1.5 turbo rather than come up with some other motor to put in there. The only other 4-cylinder engines in the current US Honda/Acura lineup are the 2.4 liter NA motors in the Accord & TLX ranging from 185 to 206 hp depending on trim.

I suppose Honda could’ve tuned the 1.5 turbo to an even higher state but I figure they probably didn’t want to go too crazy with it and cause reliability issues. The 1.5 turbo in the Civic EX may also be underrated , but take that with a grain of salt because it’s tough to figure dyno numbers for CVT cars which this was. Once the magazine reviews come out the bench racing can commence in full! ;)

Any potential buyers better hope that its will be less $$ than the FR-S or BRZ considering its same in performance on paper but not in real world. >:)

Except, you know, if they’re shopping for something with a back seat that fits adult humans.
