Getting Shafted By Mazda

Can’t buy the ‘jackshaft’ bearing and seals for a 2004-2009 Mazda3, but mine is bad.

So instead of paying $250 for a new shaft, I did some research. Since the bearing and seals were available for the 3's predecessor Protege, and are available separately for the 2010+ Mazda 3 and Mazda 5 I had my old shaft pressed apart in hopes there’d be a number on the bearing and seal to order replacements from a manufacturer other than Mazda. Like SKF, FAG, ETC.

Here is the shaft in its dismantled state:

Sadly the seals were not salvageable, but no matter, I found some interesting info. When I cross-referenced the “6206 C4" number on the bearing I found many places online selling replacements. In looking at the seal, one for a newer 3 or Mazda 5 looks eerily similar.

So I ran the OEM Mazda bearing part number, and found a selling dealer with a picture of the actual bearing and GUESS WHAT. It has the same markings mine has.

Which means the seals, which LOOK exactly like what I have, should be the same size. At least I hope. I ordered them from Tasca Mazda, who’s picture I stole for the above new shaft. $43 shipped.

Sure beats $250, if it all works. And my car will finally be quiet again.

That is not a sealed bearing. It is a shielded bearing. You should find replacement external seals because those shields are not water/lubricant barriers.

I have two new seals on the way with the bearing. It IS a bad design, but it lasted 100k miles and 12 years, and I’m not planning on keeping it forever.

What is that exactly, the output shaft that connects the transmission to the Diff?

Connects the transmission to the right side CV shaft. That way the left and right CV shafts are the same length for reduced torque steer.

I’ve been searching for this information for days. Just stumbled across it as I was writing up a new “Please Help Me!” post. Did this end up working for you?

It did, but didn’t solve ALL the noise. We were thinking it was internal trans bearing noise, so I traded it in on my Ram.

Oof. I’m wondering if I wouldn’t be better off ditching mine at this point too.

Do you have the part numbers by chance?

Not anymore. But if you look up the shaft for a 2007 or so Mazda5 that’s the parts I used.

So this stuff: https://www.jimellismazdaparts.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_assembly=302287&ukey_make=995&ukey_model=14357&modelYear=2007&ukey_category=20255

I’m seeing a bearing and three dust seals here. The other diagrams only show two dust seals and don’t label the bearing, but have the same parts listed below. Looks like four parts total in your pics, so I’m going to guess I’ll need all three?

I ordered the bearings p/n 6206-2RS from Amazon.  $13.99 for 4 of them with free delivery.
