Western Oppo Meet

Thanks to Ike posting about Concourse de’Crapcan and AestheticsInMotion and I wishing there were more Left Coast Oppo meets, I have decided to make a post to gauge interest. So we came up with the idea of meeting on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Due to the nature of the Flats being crust over mud, there can be issues of getting stuck, and if you are not stuck, then the crust is rough and such if you really want to go fast, that’ll be hard. Speed Week this year is August 12-18. They plow an area to race on so it is smooth and all. My thought is a long weekend camping and driving if that is something everyone else could be interested in. Hopefully the is central enough to get Oppos from all over California, Oregon, Colorado, and such.

We could go something like August 24-27. That is Thursday meet and Sunday leave. Obviously those dates can change and people can come and go. Now I would like to know who would be seriously interested in doing this and Hooning in a hoonable area. You can’t camp on the flats, but you can on near by BLM land. There are also services and such in nearby Wendover. Also if you have gearhead friends you would like to bring that may fit well with in the Oppo circle then I would encourage you to bring them. If we are camping then the more the merrier.

That’d be a really long drive for a long weekend from San Francisco (~10.5 hrs), LA (~10.5 hrs), Portland (~12.5 hrs), and Seattle (~13.5 hrs). That said, I can’t think of a much better location for an entire West Coast meetup. You’re gonna have to screw somebody over. This locations screws everyone on the actual coast roughly equally. I would consider it but it seems very ambitious. Maybe after having some more local meetups?

This is a perfectly good idea and I’m sure would be a lot of fun, but calling it a “West Coast meet” is like calling a meet in Indianapolis an “East Coast meet,” except that Indianapolis is closer to the coast.

Yup it is a 13 hour drive for me out here on the CA coast too. But the point was to include the non coastal westerners as well. I guess we could at least do a California Oppo meet in Fresno. That is pretty central.

I can tell you from experience that, especially if you are used to wetter climes, camping on or near the salt flats is unpleasant...especially in the summer. I would be happy to help you find something else depending on what you are looking at happening at this thing. SLC is only an hour and a half a way and there are some interesting places between there and here. Might as well stay someplace a little less...um...barren. Plus the closer you get to SLC the closer you are to places like the alpine loop.

Great basin could be neat, you’d have to get sites though. It has access to the lonliest road in america, plus a road to 10,000 feet if it gets hot.

I’ve actually been thinking a lot about how fun it would be to participate in a rally/caravan in the near future. That said, I would love to participate in this, but have to say a definite “maybe” as I don’t know where I’ll even be after graduating.

Its true. If you are coming out to Utah area just be advised that its 2 hours between cool things. Thats not bad, it just means to prepare for big distances. I mean this

I would be up for a meet, but the thing with the salt flats is - uhm - there’s not really anything else to do out there. A meet in Denver or Santa Fe might be more interesting (or even elsewhere in Utah?).
