I know Mazda has been doing their interior design this way for a few years, but I just can’t get behind it.

Am I the only one that hates the tablet stuck to the top of the dash look?

I don’t like screens in cars, period. But it very much looks like an afterthought in Mazdas.

No, and that’s why this is something people complain about frequently.

That looks little bit jarring yes. I’ve noticed a lot of car manufactures have been doing this lately. Here is my own interior. I have on too but it seems to fit a bit better than that mazda. Also I might be biased.

I don’t really care either way, and it does preserve sight lines around the screen better than a more fully integrated solution.

Miata.net, when the ND was unveiled, was basically a wall of whining about “ONLY 155 HORSEPOWER?” and “PEOPLE WILL SLICE THE TOP TO TRY TO STEAL THE TABLET”.

A shame there are no tacos to be had at this moment.

Also Mercedes-Benz does this, too.

To be fair, I also like tacos, but I dislike those screens a lot more. Sane for Mercedes and others. It just looks so lazy. As if they had the design freeze on a Friday evening, ad the designer thought: “Aaah, 10 minutes to the weekend... Oh shit, the screen! Meh, here you go.”
This is the thing that bugs me on my 208 GTI, but at least it’s half integrated.

I don’t mind it because it takes up less overall real estate than something like this in my car:

Then again, the recessed screen in my car allows for resting my phone in front of it to use Google Maps instead of the crap BMW navigation.

I really shouldn’t be complaining about this since this is the interior of my car (which many people hate)

The worst part about it is that all of the functions of the system are touch screen, which is a real PITA, not to mention a fingerprint magnet.

If you’re going to have it stick out like that, I think Mazda does it “right” at least. They carve out a little area for it. It looks like it belongs there, specifically. Looks like it might even retract into the dash, though it doesn’t.

Compare that to Mercedes who quite literally looks like they suction cupped an 8" tablet just above the vents because they forgot to include an infotainment system during the design phase.

In short, I’m fine with Mazda’s placement of it, or any other manufacturer who takes the time to actually carve out a specific spot on the dash to place the screen. Mercedes’ stuck on garmin though looks like ass.

You know what would be cool, if it went up and down at the push of a button. If I could hide it sometimes. Also whenever a new person gets in the car they always grab it and give it a slight push, “hey does this thing move?”

On the RX-8 it does just that. Sadly, it is a sat nav screen only, so you don’t need it 99% of the time.

I couldn’t figure out how to vote, because although I don’t find it aesthetically appealing, it is very good functionally, at a great height to look at while driving without making the dash enormous (basis of opinion: I drive my wife’s 2014 Mazda3 on occasion). So I’m happy with it, satisfied, but don’t exactly like it. It’s not offensive when you drive the car regularly, so I think a lot of the complaints are because people aren’t used to it.

I prefer the screen location in my GTI aesthetically, but it is a good bit further away from my line of sight, and thus more of a distraction. But I don’t have to raise my arm as far to poke at it.

Kinja'd!!!

Also, I like tacos, and didn’t think I could choose more than one option.

Think of it this way, eventually car software will catch up with apple/android/etc. and we will just use our portable devices anyway. When that happens it will be much easier to delete the screen on the Mazdas since it isn’t integrated into the dash.

I have a mazda 6 with that interior. After awhile it is actually pretty nice, its kind of takes a bit to get used to but it does work pretty well. It also doesn’t stick up as much as you would think.

I haven’t had any seat time in a recent Mazda, but I can imagine what you’re saying is correct. If it’s closer to your line of sight that isn’t a bad thing. How is glare on it? I would think being up that high on the dash would suck, but maybe not.

As for voting, it is a rather hard choice. Tacos are pretty damn tasty.

I’m sure it’s coming. And honestly, it probably makes a lot of sense. Just put a phone dock in the middle of the dash. Only problem then would be that phones would probably have to get even bigger.

Oddly enough, I actually like the digital speedo up high on my Civic. When I drive my wife’s Corolla I dislike having to shift my eyes down to see the speedo.

Back to that Honda, they did make some very simple and functional interiors. I owned 5 different Hondas from the 80's and loved every one of them. One of the quirks I always loved was how quickly you could get the defroster to work if you turned on the air conditioner. It was like a turbocharger for the HVAC system.

Damn, that LS500 interior is a work of art. Well, until I look down to the footwell. There’s like no legroom at all! I’m not a toddler, I have adult sized knees, damnit!

This is what I wish we could go back to (within reason). I don’t need a console that’s 4 feet wide.

I imagine the drivers seat is in 5'0" women position so that the photographer could get back there to actually take the picture in angle he wanted. I sat in a LS460!and own a LS400 and legroom is the least of your worries. Also this is the door panel on one of the options for the LS500. Dragon skin leather with a milled glass insert.

My Mini is among the last to have that Spartan type of interior. My Porsche features the giant, high rising center console. I love the Porsche setup. The wider center console is a good thing. Why not use that space instead of just having carpet in your pic? Plus, it makes the car feel like a glove.

The interiors of Mazda vehicles veto’d them off my list when shopping for a car in 2013. Can’t handle that screen. Volvos got axed due to the “phone pad” of buttons in the middle (and price).
