They should instead have 200Z and 300Z variants of the Z34 that use the Infiniti Q60's 2.0T and 3.0L TTV6 (in Red Sport 400 guise), respectively. A more powerful Z fights the Mustang GT and Camaro SS, while a less powerful Z fights the Mustang EB and Camaro 2.0T and makes up for Nissan dropping the ball with the IDx.

I think they killed the Z-cars when they got away from the straight-six.

Agree. I feel like Nissan is the only import automaker capable fighting head to head with the American Pony Cars. Like the resources are there, and the Z32 was more 90s muscle car than sports car (in my opinion).

My hot take is that Nissan is (or maybe was) the most “Americanized” of all the Japanese automakers.

That’s kind of what the IDx was supposed to be right? Ghosn talked shit about how it was going to be a Toyobaru-killer, and then he quit after he realized how tough actually making and selling it would be.

I’d love to see a 240SX successor, but it seems like cramming a turbo-4 into the current or future Z-car is the closest we’d realistically get to that.

A straight-6 Z would be cool, too.

Oh, well. At least Mercedes is implementing a straight-6 of their own, right?

Hey Nissan does some crazy shit sometimes and the Z is a big part of their history, so you never know what they will make next.

Id be okay if they smashed a turbo 4 into a 370z as long as they chopped its weight down...

Indeed! I’m hoping that they unveil the Z35 this year.

I just want this. It’s not a Miata or an 86.

Now that turboing is a thing again, shouldn’t they technically be ZXs?

Is that why “ZX” was used for the 280ZX and 300ZX?

That was my understanding. But I’m not sure the 2.8 came with a turbo, so maybe not.

Not that hot of a take, they absolutely should kill it. It’s ancient at this point.

It’s a car that fills a nice empty spot right now between Miata/toybaru and the muscle cars and higher end sports cars. $30k for a small car with 300hp.

But anyways. There are refreshes coming; 3l v6, same v6 turbocharged, and a hybrid on the top of the range.

Although I won’t be buying one because I have a car that’s great, they really need to make the IDx. I would potentially buy one in the future.

They should have made it. It was glorious.

The ZX models weren’t exclusively turbo, they also had NA versions.

So...in the mid 80s?

It makes no sense to add two new engines to an old vehicle that’s about to be phased out.

They certainly could put those engines in the new one though.

The “X” in ZX designated luxury. Basically when they switched from “purer” Zs to the heavier, grand touring type Zs.

The 280Z was the last L6. The first 300z I saw was in about 1986.

Great idea, though I’d probably have a return of the Silvia instead of the 200Z.

I know that. But the introduction coincided didn’t it?

No, the 280ZX was introduced in 1979 and the 280ZX turbo in 1981.

280ZX also had an I6, they switched to V6 engines on the Z31 300ZX which came out in 1984. Although in Japan the Z31 Fairlady 200ZR-II had a 2.0 liter turbo RB20DET I6.
