Apparently, lots of people agree with me on this.

See Stef’s article on the FP about how cars are just too damn big.

94 stars? Cool.

I think, for one kid (and maybe even two), my wife and I have perfectly serviceable family vehicles. No minivan needed, thank God.

Me, Wifey, baby, and doggo all fit fine in both Mazdas.

My cousin made it work with an FRS, so it’s entirely possible.

Your vehicles are still too big.

It’s a strange article. Your cars are too big, unless you want to have a big car, then that’s cool too. The gist seems to be buy what you want, but don’t buy want you want just because you think you might need extra space someday.

I was driving a single cab pickup truck for the first five years with my kid. Mostly because I couldn’t afford to replace it but also it wasn’t much of an issue.

Now that my kids a teenager and I can afford much more than I could back then I am in LOVE with the little SUVS. This is because I really did need more space than a single cab pickup truck and I am also acclimated to driving higher profile vehicles. I also have dogs too now (not tiny ones) and often need to cart around the children of other people.

Probably don’t need a van for one kid, I agree, but even if you only stay with the one kid be prepared for carrying not just him but his little buddies around too. I think people that switch to vans are usually planning on more than just the one.

Got two kids. We do fine with a Crosstrek and an Abarth 500. When we do long trips, we rent a minivan for convenience, for less than the difference in car payments of owning the larger vehicle.

My wife and I have both drove minivans as rentals. They blow.

Personally, I love my 06 Versa. *crowd laughs* I’ve driven it to down to LA and back over the grapevine. *crowd laughs harder* I zip through neighborhoods and maneuver turns with ease. *people pee pants* *one person farts-laughs-hiccups* And the stroller fit nicely into the hatchback, until the second one came along a year later when we had to get the double stroller. Then we had to drive my wife’s 2WD Pilot on trips. *people shake heads in shame*

We did 2 small ones with a protégé 5 for a bit. More than enough space. Transitioned them to a Malibu. Thire one led to the van of mini. Just for comfortable 5 person seating. Now we have a Durango and a Charger.

I manage two kids no problem with a 96 Civic coupe. They are 8 and 9 now, but have been doing it for five years now. Before that it was a bugeye wagon. Everyone told me the same thing though, get a minivan. I drive one everyday for work, that’s enough penance.

I took it to mean that 99% of people don’t NEED a big vehicle. They buy something huge on the off chance that they move an endtable once a year, when a smaller car would meet all of their daily needs.

However if you have a big car because you LIKE big cars, that’s ok.

It’s a distinction between what people think they need versus what they just want.

Am I being wierd if I say I want everything that comes with one of those SUVs (we are talking 4Runners here)? 4 seats, towing capacity, 4wd? I know all I really need is a hatchback.

Yeah, you’re fine till to go for the third. Then it’s minivan time my friend, or big SUV, but the minivan is better. We used a q7 till we had the third little man. Three kid seats in the q7 is pretty impractical, especially when we end up with my MIL in tow with us most of the time. But you’re right on, and no need to overbuy till you have to. Especially if you’re talking about paid off vehicles. Let them pay you back for a while.

Ironically for me, my toddler and only child has me considering a pick up truck because she loves them. I’m waiting to see what the hybrid or diesel F150 is like to drive and on gas.

I always wanted a truck but it’s hard to justify in burbs but keeping the love of cars going for my daughter is more than enough justification for me lol

I’ve done the minivan rental more times than I can count on one hand. To move stuff. To go on a trip with lots of people with very little stuff. To do a family road trip with 4 people and some stuff. I’ve stayed in town and driven half way across the country. Highly recommended. Modern minivans are great, but I don’t want to pay for/need to own one with just 2 kids.

Me and my sister grew up in the back of a series of Volvo wagons. They hauled us, sports equipment, and building materials (my parents built our house themselves) often at the same time... and as far as I can tell it didn’t stunt our growth or anything. It didn’t seem that weird at the time, most parents where I grew up had Outbacks and 240 wagons. But at some point the world decided that two adults and a newborn baby living in an apartment now require no less that 7 seats and 1 billion liters of cargo capacity.
