I took delivery of a new Tacoma in February of 2016. MSRP was $33,650 for my given option package, TRD Sport. I ticked no other option boxes beyond a manual and the tow package.

Kinja'd!!!

Just curious as to the value one year later and 16,000 miles.

KBB to a private party - $33,500

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Currently, dealers are asking a min of $34,000.

Trade-in varies between $30,000 and $32,500

Freaking crazy. I can trade my truck in for the exact amount I paid for it last year, when it rolled off the factory floor.

Trade it in and buy a new Taco. Just rinse and repeat every year.

I want a pickup, but I won’t even look at used Taco’s it’s fascinating and depressing at the same time.

If taxes weren’t so damn high, you could make that work. A lease would be dirt cheap.........

But, taxes SHOULD only be the difference in what they pay you for the used one and what the new one costs.

I see your point though. I’d love to lease myself, but I simply commute too far to make it worthwhile without exorbitant overage fees

I know they’re respectable trucks, but this is nuts. Wondering if this is a sort of fad or bubble that will eventually play itself out.

Also probably why I’ve seen so many ‘95-’00 250,000 mile trucks on CL for $15k.

We almost bought new in 2010 -$38K, but then I found a 2005 TRD Sport for $18K privately.. and then Toyota paid $14K to put a new frame in it.. and now the same truck sells at the dealerships for $20K..

There is a bubble for less than 5 years.. people asking more than MSRP because they put black wheels and a lift kit on.

Looks like maybe you could’ve used a LB?

When I sold cars a decade ago - damn, it has been a decade now - my manager was amazed at the resale on Tacoma. He described their resale value like a rock. This isn’t a new phenomenon but I don’t know how long it will last.

Nah, I wanted it to fit in the garage. Plus the one or two times a year I transport a bike didn’t make sense to add the cost.

Wouldn’t you only pay the sales tax on the difference from trade in to new? So about 7-8% on a few grand?

But, taxes SHOULD only be the difference in what they pay you for the used one and what the new one costs.

That is true of sales tax (at least in most states with one). But in states with an excise tax, that is based on the value of the vehicle (sometimes in a complicated fashion). So always trading in for a newer car means high excise taxes ever year.

That’s wild! Though I do remember my friend getting way more than expected for a similarly low-mileage 2 year old Colorado when he traded it in. Makes no sense given how fast trucks normally depreciate. Maybe it’s a condition thing?

I guess people assume they are getting a good deal on a used car without actually looking at new prices. Kinda hysterical.

No a 2013 with about 25k on the odo. Perfect condition though. The LTZ is the really pimped out model, full leather, dvd, nav., heated seats etc..

Same with my 2015. A few months ago, I did the KBB “Cash Offer” for your car...and it was right at what I paid for it a year and a half ago. It’s part of the reason why I actually wonder if my son will inherit it in 8 years, it may still be worth too much for a teenager.

How’s the transmission? Doubt if I’ll find a manual to test drive.

I like it. 1st is really short and 5th is more or less useless but I have no regrets. Short throws are available in the aftermarket but the stock one is mine. I commute ~50 mins each way in heavy traffic. No issues.

Makes sense that 1st is short in a truck. Do you end up starting in 2nd from a stop (or near-stop) quite a bit?

05/23/2018 at 10:56, STARS: 1

Kinda, not enough torque in the motor low enough. Torque peaks at 4600. If I’m rolling at all, 2nd. If I’m stopped 1st. You can do 2nd but it bogs a bit and you need to slip the clutch a little. It’s not terrible and it could be done but it seems a little abusive to do it all the time.

If you are easy on the gas you can easily beat the highway estimates. I keep the tires at 35(manual calls for 29 or 35 depending on the tire) and I normally get 23-24 mpg per tank. I’ve seen short trips over 30 mpg.

Ah, gotcha. The first part of my drive is country roads, so rolling stops are where it’s at.

Good to know about the mileage.

It has a little mpg indicator, if you set the cruise to like 55 ish in 6th it will peg out at 30 mpg. I can roll all around back roads in Michigan and get amazing mileage.
