I still don't want an M4 GTS. No thanks Doug!

Kinja'd!!!

I did riff off of his title for fun, but this is NOT me taking a shot at BlueMazda2! I’ve just never understood this car. For $10k Steve Dinan will sell you his “S2" package AKA the same 70 horsepower gain and an extra 100 lb ft of torque instead of a paltry 40.  With that in mind it’s hard to view the water injection headache as anything more than a gimmick whose sole purpose is to legitimize this “special edition” to some extent.

Yes, the wheels are gorgeous. But that’s the only thing I can get into here. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE BMWs, but the water injection seems pointless. Doug describes the +70 horsepower and +40 lb ft gains as impressive. But they really aren’t in 2017... I think he was saying that for the camera because he likes the car. And he’s welcome to like it. You are too. But I just can’t get past the fact that instead of turning up the boost via simple ECU edits and hardware changes, BMW has it’s customers constantly refilling a water tank in the trunk.

It’d be awesome if all 700 were bought by hardcore M4 drivers who want that extra edge at the track (and at their local C&C). But I doubt it. I’d be surprised if the majority of these actually saw track time. Like most limited edition cars these days, the majority will have a few thousand miles put on them by the original owner, who hopes to then sell it for at least a little more than he paid for it.

You also get better suspension & brakes. So it’s not just we extra Hp/Tq.

For a 100k there are many other cars I would much rather have. I’ve seen 2 in real life on the road and each time I’ve thought to myself that I’d rather have something else for the price.

Yes of course, I know there are other bits :) but my point stands with those too, I still don’t think I’d pay double the price for M4 with a little extra power and an in-house aftermarket style handling makeover.

Agreed, and that’s before you hear the thing. IDK where BMW went wrong, but a 335i with an exhaust still sounds better.

If you don’t need a track weapon there are tons of cars that are just as fast and better appointed.

And even if you do need a track weapon, you could be 90% there for a fraction of the price via the aftermarket. And it’d still be comfy because it’s a standard M4.

Cars like this are not an excercise in logic. You can certainly get something similar for cheaper via aftermarket parts, but this car is for the most diehard BMW fans who want the trackiest thing to come out of M GmbH in recent history. I do agree, however, that it is the unfortunate reality most of these will end up in the hands of prospectors.

When I get one, I vow to make it the first M4 GTS with over 100k miles.

I have an extremely weird taste in cars. My posts prove just that.

Also, you get a star for referencing my post.

Yep. 100% marketing unless you’re actually a track day fanatic. In his last few BMW videos Farah drove cars equipped with (Dinan again I think?) softer aftermarket springs because in the real world the compliance makes you faster on everything but a silky smooth track.

That’d be epic!! And I totally understand, I love so many heinous cars from the eighties. Car guys who can actually remember the eighties think I’m insane lol.

Thing is, even if you are a track day fanatic, you still need to be a rich one to afford one of these track focused monsters. I mean, they often charge extra for taking out stuff! The rest of us are going to take our dailies to the track or buy a beater track car, right? The market for cars like this must be smaller than miniscule. It must be a halo effect thing for a brand.

There’s always the “modified car” vs. “factory performance version” argument though. Yes, Dinan has a warranty, blah blah blah.

Each has their merits.

I think you’re right. Special editions of exotics have been all the rage for the past few years, and BMW definitely wanted some of that limelight for the benefit of the brand.

Absolutely, and I can’t even afford a standard M4 so my opinion is worthless lol.

The M3 used to be a capable track toy out of the box. That I need to buy an M4, plus a Competition Package which takes the price to probably $80-90k, is ridiculous.

If you must BMW, the M2 is the better fun-to-dollar deal here. I still think a base Porsche Cayman is more fun and feels more special than any BMW M-car.

furthermore, Farah has also mentioned that the 2 series is “the right size” because it’s close to an E46. The 4 series is HUGE. I have no experience with Porsches though. Gotta work on that...

If the car was given to me, then yeah I’d like it for a track car. As a street “legal” track car, it’s a waste of money, better and faster cars out there for the money

I had a chance to buy one of these and I didn’t go for it. Doesn’t make sense to me at all (and I don’t even like the wheels). The Dinan S2 is still a car with 4 seats and that doesn’t require me to fill the car up with water. Also, you can get a manual.

Like you I hope they are all bought by track warriors but since I’ve already seen a few of them driving around I don’t think that will be the case.

Or better yet spend half the money and get a 2017 Camaro ZL-1 1LE and spend the rest on tires.

I hate being such a cynic. But yeah I’m sure I’ll see at least one at BMW events this summer and I will be thrilled to see rock chips and melted rubber on the fenders if that’s the case... but I doubt it.

Yeah you can, because you’re faster than Porsche 911 GT2, Koenigsegg CCX, AMG GT-S, Mclaren 650S Spider and a Lambo Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera.

I’ve read that every modded M4 has been decidedly worse than stock ones. I get the appeal of the GTS as a special edition, but it would not be the car I’d buy for that price.

Dinan’s amount of experience plus the level of research and development makes their packages extremely OEM like.

Dinan packaged cars tend to hold their values better than other modified BMW’s. Not quite as good as proper M special editions but still much better than the other modified/stock examples.

BMW would LOVE for this to be the reincarnation of the CSL, but no. The CSL IS the CSL.

By the way, I do know one (very rich) guy that bought one to make a race car, decided it was above his skill level, and instead sold it for a profit and then bought two M2's for the same purpose. Nice problem to have.
