Why is GM launching an Opel based car, less than a month after it sold Opel to PSA?

This has the same platform as the Malibu and new Lacrosse, and GM engines and transmissions - so technically it still belongs to GM. If they wanted to build it over here (for now its built in Germany) they could.

Ford kept selling the original Fusion long after they sold their interest in Mazda. Same thing here, no?

Let me reorient the situation for you: You were expecting them to cancel a car that was less than a month away from launch?

GM is launching their car made with their platform and powertrains which will go through its usual life cycle. Opel and PSA will have to come up with something else for the next generation Insignia.

Let me guess the auto shifts like a rifle bolt?

Why would GM throw away years of development work as well as marketing prep, etc.? Easy enough to sell PSA-built cars.

I think these cars look fantastic. The interior is a way better design than what it replaces. I hope this is a home run for Buick. The only thing I could do without is the plastic cladding on the wagon wheel arches, but that’s apparently par for the course on anything that’s supposed to be utilitarian. Oh well.

Not quite the same, I don’t think. The old Fusion and the old Mazda6 shared the same platform, but they weren’t built in the same factory. I do believe the Regal will still be built in the same German factory that Opel will build the Insignia in.

no, because the Fusion/Milan/MKZ were (and are) built at a Ford plant. if the Regal wagon is built at an Opel plant, then they’ll have to negotiate transfer pricing from PSA.

honestly, between this and the Cruze/Equinox diesels, I think GM is betting on winning over a significant number of pissed off VW TDI owners. We’ll see if it works. if it doesn’t, then at least they haven’t wasted a ton of money on trying.

Opel sells cars based on GM technology, not the other way around. It may be closely related to an Opel but it’s GM technology. Opel keeps the rights to use GM technology after the sale for some period of time before they transition over to PSA platforms.

I think probably only the first or two MY it’ll be built out of Europe, like the current one, and eventually moved to US or China production?

I thought they were tooling up to build the Regal here at Oshawa?
