Kinja'd!!!

my mom’s friends land cruiser (mid to early 90s) needs a lot of stuff done and she doesn’t want to get it fixed. She doesn’t really care about cars, and just needs something to get from point A to point B with a tightish budget. She sent my mom this, I know the matrix is a decent car. My mom said something about it having a new engine, which seems odd. Here’s the link:

The Matrix isn’t bad. They get lower MPG that one that might think though. But coming from a Land Cruiser that would probably be like driving a Prius to her.

Only other thing I can add is I hope she doesn’t trade the Land Cruiser in. There’s a huge following for them out there. She’d probably get hosed on trade in from the dealer.

I also look at a Vibe, it’s the same car with a Pontiac Badge & it looks way better

Kinja'd!!!

The front seat can fold flat. When I had my 03' vibe, I hauled 8' 2"x 4"s with ease.

Kinja'd!!!

The rear glass can also lift separately.

I never knew that about the rear glass. That’s an awesome feature!

These are nice. Lots of room in the front and back seats. Great mpg - we frequently saw 34 mpg average for a tank.

It isn’t fast. The interior is cheap and it can be noisy at highway speeds.

We put nearly 200k on it and ran it out of oil twice (my ex preferred 36k mile intervals between changes). Couldn’t be killed.

Highly functional basic transportation - this is it.

Not sure what year but if I had to guess I would say it’s a 92. Has some rust issues, oil leaks, and something is up with the steering from what I heard.

i wanted details, not a spec sheet :D

i dont need to know the extirors dimentions, or the fact that it has the engine in the front. I want to know what service, who owned it, are the brakes in good condition, do the tires match, etc etc,

basicly, whats the story on the car, and I want to know about that ‘new’ motor and why its in there....

If the grille says “TOYOTA” on the front, it’s a 91-94. Airbags + the bean-in-hat logo makes it a 95-97.

This is a “Standard” with crank windows, so no power locks either. Matrix pricing is weird. I’d tell her to keep it to XR only for Matrix shopping, at least then you will get power equipment.

You don’t want to have to use a key everytime you want to get into the hatch.

It’s a tall Corolla hatchback, as in officially it’s called the Corolla Matrix and says so on the owners manual.

“New engine, which is odd”

Late to the party here, but 2003 Corollas are notorious for excessive oil consumption on that 1ZZ-FE. The seemed to work out the bugs after 2005.
