This is no budget economy car. The CX-9 looks and feels really, really nice. The aggressive outward-jutting grille looks odd in photos but is super imposing in person.

Sat in one at the Chicago Auto Show - so so nice. Mazda is doing a damn good job on interiors these days.

This is no budget economy car

At around $50k for the Signature edition, I would think not! But seriously, it definitely competes above its class and price range, from everything I’ve seen and read. There’s not a crossover I’d rather buy, if I had to go that route.

It looks just a bit less than the XC90 but it’s in that conversation by appearances.

I think that’s pretty high praise being quite a bit cheaper

The peak of the hood/grille transition area is sharp - sharp in that it could cut you. I have to wonder how that got through ever-increasing pedestrian safety regulations, maybe not tested at all.

Agreed! I saw one yesterday in black and the design is very imposing! It has a ton of presence and is easily one of my favorite new SUV designs, it has the right mix of angular and curvy.

From that angle the headlights make it look angry. Or annoyed.

And IMHO it’s the better car by sheer lack of badge snobbery. The Volvo is amazing, to be sure. But the Mazda is the “smart money” and that gets you the right kind of attention.

It looks good, except for the ipad sticking out of the dash. Seriously, why can’t some car designers integrate a touch screen into the dash/console without it looking lik an afterthought?

It’s above the knees, is how. Also plenty of crush space under that hood...

...crush space is fucking stupid. You hit that hood hard enough to dent it, you gon’ be fucked up anyway.

Got it, so your butt or thighs (or worse) will be smashed up instead of calves. Seems legit!

I suppose it is better to hit something soft than hard.

Pretty much.

Hoods are still [usually] made of steel. Steel that is just thick enough and shaped appropriately and can hold its form. Some hoods are not steel and require even more force to buckle than thin sheet steel (read: thick application of sheet molding compound i.e. Corvettes). I would be impressed if those regs account for hood material.

You’re not wrong... I think you can spec these towards $45,000

I am sure there is some silly formula that ignores logical factors, but mandates the high chunky front ends we all know and love on modern cars.
