Probably not.

I am wondering how things work with military vehicles. There is a govt auction that sells things like humvees and big ass military trucks... for farm use as they are not road legal. What I don’t know is what makes them not road legal?

Does that ever expire? If the car is older than say 25 years, does it fall into the old car imports law? Can I buy a 25-30 year old military vehicle and make it road legal?

Kinja'd!!!

Do military cars/trucks have VIN numbers so they can be registered with DMV?

I think the fact that they are military vehicles is what makes them not road legal.

Depends on the state, the vehicle, and there is a form that may or may not go with them that greatly increases the ease.

I would imagine that some of it has to do with these types of vehicles not complying to emissions or safety regs for passenger car use. A similar case would be for show cars and the like from GM or Ford, for example. While they may be roadworthy, they don’t meet federal regulations, therefore can’t be driven on the street.

I’m not knowledgeable on the subject, but emissions are an obvious reason why they wouldn’t be road legal. Technically, they’re probably not crash-tested, either. They must have some ID number, but perhaps not a 17 digit VIN.

Depends on where you are located. Some DMV’s will register just about anything. If you are able to get it registered in a state such as Maine, you can then transfer the registeration to another state as the vehicle has already held a registration. Funny thing is, you don’t need to be a resident of Maine to register a vehicle there. Your state may have an issue at first, but it usually will go through. Military vehicles have a special VIN number unlike civilian vehicles which is why DMV usually have an issue. My brother had a surplus Humvee and this is basically what he went through to get his road legal. There were a few running around town other than his, so I would say it is not unique to get it to pass. You can also find them on EBay, and usually those have been registered already. You can always ask the seller what they went through to get it registered in their state.

You’re thinking about thinking aren’t you?

You haven’t thought in a while, have you?

I know exactly what you’re thinking.

Am I making you think?

How do you think I know?

I can see that you’re really thinking.

I got to say, I tapped into it… and it really feels good.

I like you.

Do you want to know what it’s like to be me?

Do you really want to know?

OK, I guess you do.

I appreciate you thinking this way.

there must be a way around it because there are two HUMVEEs for sale near me and it is certainly not ‘farm vehicle’ market area

Not in the least. WWII Jeeps have no registry problems, more modern Jeeps have no problems, military utility trucks (like an International Loadstar 4wd ex-AF service truck my dad has) have no problems, CUCV pickups and Blazers have no problems, hell, you can even road register a damn Ferret armored car. There *is* a military vehicle expressly banned in the US from road registration, but it’s a special case - the M151 MUTT.

So far, about 2500 Humvees have been honorably discharged from military bases to private ownership, a process that got easier last summer when IronPlanet began offering Standard Form 97, “The United States Government Certificate to Obtain Title to a Vehicle.” That crucial piece of paperwork allows buyers to prove ownership, and from there one can pursue the quest for a license plate, although IronPlanet isn’t making any promises on that front. For instance, it’s easy to imagine that California might actively thwart the proliferation of menacing diesel troop carriers on its thoroughfares. Whereas in Texas, the DMV clerk might compliment your sidearm and “Don’t Tread on Me” belt buckle while handing over a vanity plate that reads “SECEDE.” Check your state guidelines before bidding.

I was being sarcastic and trying to apply circular reasoning; military vehicles cannot be road legal because they are military vehicles.

I am aware that there are many that can indeed be registered and driven legally.

I am pretty sure I can bring an ex soviet Lada from the 70s and it will not pass any emissions... yet it can be driven around since its older than 25 years old. Though I am not 100% sure on it. All I can tell you is that there are even US made cars that cant pass emissions yet, they can drive... because maybe that state doesn’t have emissions test.

That’s what I am also thinking... There is no way US Govt will auction off thousands of vehicles... all for farm use. I used to be a farmer.. .and I needed a combiner more than a humvee.

OK. by that logic, I surely can go to Texas. High Five the DMV lady. Bolt on new plate on my truck and stick title in my glove box (pistol/grenade box - i don’t know what that’s called in a military truck) and go to California. Since I already have a legal vehicle in the US of A, I should be transfer it to another state...

It might be cheaper to buy one from Govt auction than to buy already registered vehicle.

What I am seeing is on craigslist there is some personnel carrier trucks... 6wd. awesome. However, I am not sure if those are road legal or if I still have to jump through hoops.

You would think a US Military vehicle should have no issues being on roads in US... but... it do

I didn’t get that, since that’s only sort of circular. Your intent wasn’t clear. It would bear out if there were express statutes or limits prohibiting a military vehicle. If a bar is placed on something because of its nature, then referring to it by its nature or classification as a *legal* reason it can’t be registered, rather than a more specific rationale is not circular in the least.

E.g. a jurisdiction banning military vehicles for purely aesthetic reasons related to being aesthetically military vehicles is surely something that could exist, and would qualify “military vehicles can’t be registered because they are military vehicles”.

It worked for my brother. We thought it got totaled after a hurricane when a tree 3' in diameter fell across the hood. Pinned it to the ground. When we cut the tree off, the only damage was a crack in the hood and the snorkel need to be replaced. Seriously tough vehicle. Luckily he had a spare of each.

There’s a great deal of idiocy on that point. You can bring in the Lada, but only if it’s in its original configuration from the EPA’s point of view - even if it’s newer than the Clean Air Act and would not have been legal for import under EPA rules at that time. The instant it is modified before import, it becomes technically illegal. Because fuck you, that’s why. If it is modified after import, it’s also probably technically in trouble, but it depends on what you swap in - and the state you’re in likely won’t care at all, just the EPA. In theory. If you put in a new EPA certified more modern engine in its correct configuration, then the engine swap would be legal according to the rules for a US car, but that modification would make the vehicle illegal to import again if it ever left, which might have retroactive effects on its technical legality.

It can be done in many states, but I would have to ask why? Unless you happen to be driving across the great planes or open desert, they are useless and terrible to drive. They are too wide to drive off of established roads in the forest unless you have a logging crew going in front of you, and the are also too wide for most of the old mining trails that take you up and down the mountains of the West. If you do happen to be in open country, then they are just terrible to drive. I spent more time than I care to think about driving them in the Marine Corps.

I’ve never once owned a vehicle that had a reasonable answer to this question - why.

It’s a car/truck. It’s cool. I’ll drive it and enjoy wrenching on it to a point.

DVM is able to register foreign imported cars with non standard VIN numbers. Case in point - Doug’s GT-R that had like 3 numbers for vehicle ID number.

They would be slightly better with a duramax swap. Also avoid armored ones. Over their lifespan, they went from originally weighing around 6k (80's production, non turbo 6.2, 3 speed auto, soft tops and doors, no A/C...) to almost 14K for the 2000's on the same chassis. Due to the weight, the current up armored trucks are only slightly more capable off-road than Tahoe with a 4" lift kit and some bigger tires. The sweet spot is probably the early/mid 90's production stuff. By that point they usually had A/C and they all got a 4 speed auto, but we’re still reasonably light. Overdrive makes going more than 40 mph somewhat less miserable.

There is a guy here in town that has a ton of WWII era military vehicles. He has them registered and drives them on the road. Deuces, Willy’s, Ambulances and even his 1/2 tracks. However, he has them registered as Antique Vehicles. 1/2 track has rubber tracks.
