Is light beer brewed differently, or do they literally just water down normal beer?

Brewed differently, unless you’re drinking Keystone Light or something.

I meant light as in “low-calorie” (or marketed as such), although that image is enlightening.

less carbohydrates when making it. Also as less carbohydtrates lead to less alcohol.

kinda both. its made slightly different but instead of making higher alcohol they then water it down, to reduce alcohol content.

I took a tour of an AB brewery back in engineering school and they admitted during a Q&A that if something goes wrong with a batch of Bud Light and it doesn’t pass taste control for their “premium line” it gets canned and sold as Natural Light. They do still actually make Natty on purpose, because they don’t screw up the other beer that much, but rest assured when you get a 30 rack of Natty or Stones that tastes more funky than usual, it is just Bud/Coors that didn’t make it.

I believe there was once a scandal at Safeco Field where they were accused of LITERALLY watering down their beer... and selling it for $10 a pop.

Clearly they shine more light at it.

I think the “it’s for/not for beginners” recommendations are kinda funny. I’m not a very big drinker to begin with, but I like pales and reds. I can’t STAND IPAs. And porters, which I should ostensibly hate? Best beer I’ve ever had is a porter my bicycle mechanic home brewed himself in a shed behind his garage.

The pale lager shouldn’t really be on that chart. All the others are ales; lagers should be on their own scale.

Ales and lagers are the two prime types of beer, using different types of yeast (top growing vs. bottom growing) and fermenting at different temperatures.

The whole point of there being so many types of beer is because everyone’s tastes and preferences are different. When someone says “I don’t like beer”, it probably means they just haven’t tried a type that appeals to their pallet.

The “not for beginners” description has some merit, because certain types do tend to be a bit of an acquired taste. Hops in particular are something that many people do not care for at first, so the very hoppy ales often make a poor starter for new beer drinkers.

Thank you for mansplaining beer to me. I understood the whole point of the graphic. I was saying it’s funny how I’m an outlier to its recommendations.
