I did something dumb. I have been riding the Vespa regularly, and overconfidence got the best of me. I went down.

I am mad because it was my own dumb fault for taking a corner too fast, and for just plain not respecting the machine, its limits, and the realities of risk on two wheels.

I don’t know if I am actually injured, or just banged up. I took a pretty good shot to the shoulder, and bounced my head off the ground. The head is fine (thank you Peter for the helmet lecture) but my shoulder really hurts. I dug my finger in along my collarbone and felt no movement or severe pain, so I think that it is just soft tissue and brusing.

Dumb, dumb, dumb. A mere second of inattention is all it takes on 2 wheels.

Be careful out there.

Glad you are (mostly) okay! Get checked out if you have the chance. Better to catch stuff early.

Wow! That’s no good.

*may I at least give a shout out of respect because you were hooning your Vespa and I think that’s rad?!?

you may want it checked just in case. Have you ever broken anything? I think if you have once you’d know if it happened again. I broke my wrist sledding off a roof and when I went down rollerblading a few years later, I instantly knew I had broken it again. I got this nasty feeling like i was gunna puke and pass out.

I’m glad you’re okay.

I know that feeling all too well. The mercifully few times I’ve done something stupid and had to pay for it have always sent me into a deep funk.

Hey, it happens. Nothing to be embarrassed about, as long as you come out the other side a wiser rider. I’ve got two downs under my belt, both times being stupid and not respecting the machine and the road surface. I must be a little dense since it took two times for me to learn my lesson.

Glad you didn’t get hurt too bad - take a few Ibuprofen and have a long hot shower/bath before you call it a night. You WILL feel it in the morning.

Did you crash in your work clothes? Like full suit and tie?

I have crashed on pavement many times, it hurts like hell. Usually just soft tissue damage and it will be better in a few days.

Glad you’re alright! As much as we love them, a machine is just a machine.

That being said, any major damage to the Vespa?

Hope your shoulder feels better soon, but it definitely happens to everyone! Any crash you can walk away from is a good crash. I had a similar experience on a wet and bumpy road. Is the Vespa salvageable?

As a motorcycle ride with a recent embarrassment himself, I will say that I empathize and also will use this opportunity to preach the virtues of a good armored jacket. But a little late for that now, so no long speech, just a reminder to keep your eyes out for deals and hope that you heal soon.

My jacket and boots and pants and helmet all worked together to make my “shiny side down” moment an embarrassment and not an emergency. It is much cheaper and easier to heal pride than it is to heal bones.

Scooter wrecks are a bitch but they definitely happen. Pick yourself up, dust it off and get back on there. I would definitely recommend getting looked at though. I remember beating the hell out of my knee on pavement on my little 50cc and it swelling quiet large. The prescriptions helped.

I want to tell you a true story about my roommate 15 years ago. Only slightly relevant. He bought a beater bike to learn on. His girlfriend at the time owned a very powerful Vmax. The day he gets it he borrows her helmet that says “I’m not a bitch I’m the bitch” and hits the road. Anyway his new to him bike had a bad idle issue basically revved like crazy occasionally. We’re at a busy intersection I’m behind him in my car at a red light he let’s the clutch out while in first gear and takes a long drawn out nasty spill. All these people rush to his aid and start reading his helmet. As soon as we figure out he’s ok me and a car full of buddies die of laughter. Hope your doing ok and I know you had to be there but hope that story lightens your mood. Ps I dumped dirt bikes too many times to judge. Two wheels bad but oh so good.

I wrecked at low speed 7 years ago, landed on my shoulder while wearing a riding jacket.

I didn’t go to the doctor.

It took about 8 months for me to fully recover. I gauged recovery by how far I could scratch my back with that arm lol.
