Kinja'd!!!

I have a ‘91 Corolla and there aren’t very many choices for a 155/80/13 tire, but this thing is heinous .

Get like a 155/70-13 or something normally available, hell, upgrade to a 165 if you’re fancy

I work with a woman who would put those on her car. Because they’re cheap.

The damn tread block looks like it was designed in Minecraft.

That looks like a trailer tire. Not a passenger car tire!

Certainly some very odd siping. It’s somewhere between a scaled-down mud and snow tire pattern and a mountain bike pattern superimposed on tractor-trailer grooves.

It’s irrelevant to you but there is a shit ton of decent tyres in that size available in the UK. Toyo, Michelin, Avon, Uniroyal (the German one, not the American), Continental, Dunlop, Hankook etc.

Wait, $27? That’s freaking beautiful. Although I’d spend an extra $10 and get something less terrifying, maybe even from a recognizable brand.

The problem in the US is that cars are bigger, and anything smaller than, oh, 195/65R15 or so is usually only intended for beaters, where the requirements customers make of the tires consist of: legality, and ability to hold air.

There are some exceptions - the Miata almost singlehandedly ensures availability of 195/50R15 high performance tires, for instance - though.

That tread pattern is a copy of the Goodyear Marathon trailer tire. They work fine enough for a trailer, but I can’t imagine them on a car.

If you’re looking for tall rubber these days, you are often stuck with what you can find.*

I ran into this issue with my 195R14 tires a month or so ago with my van. I found three with the load rating that would fit. THREE.

*unless you are willing to buy a taller wheel.

If you have any Mastercraft dealers local to you check with them. They make 40k tires in that size that may be better riding and have better grip at about same price. The Kuhmo in those cheaper tires from what I’ve seen aren’t the best if you get rain but are generally acceptable and wear long if rotated, etc. Look at Amazon or eBay too. Have seen a few bad reviews on some of the small Toyo lately, they used to be decent but I wouldn’t chance it.

I would have guessed closer to 22" being the cutoff, but I guess you have a point. More because most Miatas have come with 22" diameter tires and more recent higher-spec variants have come with 23".

Of course, anything under about 15" is kind of rare. I can’t think of any common cars with wheels smaller than this. Even the poverty-spec Mini Coopers and Smart Fortwos come with 15" wheels.

That’s the stock tire size for my base ‘91 Corolla. Rather go stock. I bought a set of Kumho tires on Amazon Prime and I’ll take them to the local vocational school to get them mounted.

Thanks. I just ordered a set of Kumho via Amazon Prime. My appraisal would be the same as yours of the Kumho. Decent tire overall. Essentially the only recognizable brand in that size. ‘91 Corolla Base, 235k miles.

That, and 205s! I wish there there were more decent 225/50/r15's available... The Miata wants wider wheels and I’m having trouble saying no

No. Just skim craigslist and find a set of wheels/tires from a newer car (that are larger), and make sure they’re a size that’s still supported by modern tires.

I found some Kuhmos on Amazon. Keep the reaper away for several more years. Besides, larger tires would be less nimble.

Kinja'd!!! "jdrgoat - Ponticrack?" (jdrgoat)
04/05/2017 at 09:54, STARS: 0

Good deal.

But by “larger,” I mead the wheel size increases while the overall diameter remains the same. Less sidewall. This actually should increase nimbleness.

Something like this, to get the right OD.

Kinja'd!!!

As long as you keep the overall diameter the same, your speedo will read the same. Just have to make sure the offset is within range on the wheels to allow for the wider (they will be wider, those tiny tires pretty much don’t exist anymore) tires to clear the suspension and body bits while turning.

I hear you. I found a set of Kumhos on Amazon Prime that were competitively priced even with the 2-day shipping. That buys me several years. I am quite happy with how the car handles now and except for the KYB shocks all around, I wouldn’t change a thing. Love that car.
