I mean, sure a drag build 86 isn’t unheard of. Its the engine swap thats perplexing
Its an 1800 hp 1FZ-FE. I.e. Toyota Land Cruiser I6. its massively heavy but known to make reliable power when built up. Still...weird.

It doesn’t like to rev, but I guess if you build it out a little and de-stroke it to 4 liters it packs a pretty healthy punch.

Thats what I was thinking. Though the bore on these engines are pretty close (98.4 vs 100 mm) if you de-stroked it down to 3.8-3.5 liters you could probably get some speed out of it. I think the non-crossflow head and pushrod valvetrain would give you the most troubles.

The block and general layout is so stout that you can literally just chuck boost at it and it will hold up. Not particularly sexy until you build it up.

I’ve wanted to put one of those 4.2L I6s out of an Chevy Trailblazer or GMC Envoy into something old and American - maybe a ‘53 Chevy or a box Nova? - for a long time now.

It’s not the bottom end of them that offers the challenge, like you said it is the valve train. I’ve always wanted to undersize a turbo for a 4.0 and see the low end torque I could get out of it.

But the 1FZ is dimensionally within an inch or two of a 5.9 Cummins... With the turbo on the Cummins.
