What's the Oppo consensus on Outdoor Car Covers?

I’m going to soon lose the free garage space for my 66 F100, and it’ll be sitting outside all the time. Is it worth it to use a car cover? I want to protect it from the sun, but I’m mostly worried about moisture taking longer to evaporate and rusting out the inside of the bed. Also are they are like bbq grill covers that desenegrate and have to be replaced annually?

I bought one for Phil. I’m afraid of vandalism and wear and tear from simply sitting still 25 days a month. I will report when I finally get it (seems like it was lost in the mail).

It seems some covers are better quality than others, so you may run into the bbq grill cover issue.

Not sure. I have heard that while they keep crap off the car they can also trap moisture in with the car.

My brother spent a few hundred and got a really nice cover for his S14 while it parked through the winter. I laughed and got the $40 VW one for my Jetta.

In the spring he took off the cover and did a quick wash and was off, I spent a week correcting the paint on all the flat sections to get rid of all the swirls.

Pay the money, save the paint.

I’ve been using Technalon covers for years. Lets the car breathe underneath, protects it from sun.

If the car is clean, all I need to do is dust it off after removal. No water spots.

Doesn’t last forever, tho. I think I replace them every 4 years or so.

Actually, I’ve been reading more into it and I don’t think Phil will ever wear the cover I bought for him. No thanks, I don’t want paint marring!!!

That’s what I’ve seen in the past. Water that would evaporate 12 hours after a rainstorm stays for days.

I have one for my trans am. While I can’t reccomend OER (quality issues) the actual function is quite nice. The cover is resistant enough that my t-tops don’t leak, but breathable enough that a completely bare spot of metal I have has only developed light surface rust in the year and a half I owned it.

You need to spend some money. If you put something like a tarp over it it will actually accelerate rust. I can guarantee you that a quality cover is way better than leaving it outside naked. Get one with a warranty, I had to send mine back when it started to degrade early. The second one is holding fine for now.

I used to use one in my old apartment complex’s garage because it was a super old building and this weird water dripped from the ceiling and left marks in the paint that would only come out with clay!

I had moisture problems with the cheap one that I had at first. I forget the brand that I went with, but it allows it to breathe. It was really expensive though, and it was pretty much shot after 3 years.

What’s the difference between a silver blob and a car-shaped silver blob? How can they allow a standard car cover but not allow an inflatable car cover?

Hmm... So maybe I get a quality one that breathes, and take it off for a day or so everytime it rains to speed up the drying process?

Definitely get a quality cover. It depends on how often you take it on and off regarding how much trouble you’ll have with moisture. For instance while my M3 was still doing daily duty, I never had a problem with moisture because I was taking it off almost every day. When I got another car it was an issue, but I think that was mainly because the underground garage was damp on it’s own. I bet if you just hike it up on one end on nice days it will be fine.

I’ve found that if left on where there’s wind over time they chafe the paint, basically abrading it down to primer on select corners.

For the cars i cover that’s very literally the least of their problems, but might be worth consideration by slightly less mental folk ;)

To be honest the paint is far from perfect. The bed has some surface rust already, but they are notorious for rusting quite bad. I probably looked at 20 before I bought this one and they were all rust buckets.
