I'm Upset With Keyless Start Cars

The cruze is keyless start and one day when I got home, I couldn’t lock it or turn it off because my key wasn’t detected. Went to the dealer and suddenly it worked and nothing was wrong. It happened again this morning.

But I’m away from my spare key so I’m not sure if I can start my car when I get to it this afternoon, I had to manually turn all the locks because pressing the inside lock button and closing the door would set off the alarm. Wouldn’t detect my key even next to the sensor in the cup holder, I think there should be an emergency key slot inside so I can start my car.

I wanted a car with a physical key and ended up keyless, which has screwed me twice as of today. Sorry for the rang, I’m really upset. If anyone has any solutions that can be done in a parking lot, please let me know.

I could go on and on about how much I hate Smart Keys. We’ve had one for almost 3 years and I figured I would learn to love it within a few months. Instead, I hate almost everything about it. Just the other day, I had to drive across town to rescue my wife after she drove off without the key in the car (she was cleaning out the car and accidentally removed the key after the engine was started). Why Honda didn’t put in a failsafe, I don’t know. The car will run indefinitely without a key, but when you stop the car, there’s no way to restart it. Crazy.

Oh tell me about it! I build the booths for auto shows and when we being the cars in to place them and hook them up to power the people we hire to drive the cars in can’t start them sometimes etc... I had Mazda last time, I had trouble moving them, the manual ones have even more issues, foot on brake, push lever down before shifting, and that is if you can get the fob thing to pair with the car...

Your key fob usually has a backup physical key inside of it. I don’t know how chevy’s works but with ford you press two discreet buttons on the sides and the fob splits open and reveals a physical key. There are some hidden key locks you can then use to get in and I think even start the vehicle.

Should be a physical key there right? Either way. I hate not key keys. It seems insecure and really doesn’t make your life better. And it’s not all that futuristic and cool to me either. But, I’m not the target market for these kind of “features”

It sounds like your battery is going.

Many also have a huge issue in the cold. I work as a valet and we keep the keys outside, often we will get to the cars and, nothing. Go to the backup key, get inside, press start get “Key not detected.” At this point you just sit in the car rubbing the fob in-between your hands until its warm enough to start sending its signal again.

FCA and Cadillac keys in particular have this issue, but keep them outside long enough and close to any of them will have issues.

Well that’s how I manually locked my door, but if it does have an emergency start I don’t know where it is and like an idiot, the manual is in my house because it is my current reading material because it needs to be read anyways

They do, generally the car screams at you that the key is not detected pretty quickly actually. I know I’ve had Hondas do it to me.

When I got it checked at the dealer a month ago they said it was 100%. This should be fun

At least some cars (can’t recall who) have a key slot behind the push start button. I know that Lexus (and BMW?) have a backup where you physically touch the remote to the push button, and it will work when the battery is dead. Sorry, no clue about Chevy, though—-

I keep it in my pocket which is almost always pretty warm, we’ll see what happens this afternoon, I need to stop worrying about it right now

Actually, one of my (many) beefs is that the car doesn’t scream enough. Woe unto anyone who doesn’t buckle up because it’ll scream. But if you’re about to run out of fuel, you get a tiny orange LED in the corner of the cluster. And if you drive off without the key, it’s a gentle “NO KEY” reminder in the display. Because the maintenance minder is constantly bugging us about a premature oil change, it’s easy to ignore the cluster, especially when there’s no audible alarm. (Not saying I’d miss it, but my wife, in a hurry, with two kids...)

If yo ucan’t watch the video, there is a slot underneath the plastic lining of a little cubby tray thing in front of the cupholders. Insert the physical key into that and then press the start button.

Oh yeah, you wont see issues until its unattended for hours below freezing. Just a complaint from me about the fobs.

A few years ago my sister’s 2010 Prius, the key fob battery died. The fob does have a physical key so underneath the door handle you can pop off a cap which reveals a traditional keylock. Then you had to hold the end of the keyfob to the start button with your foot on the brake to start.

Similar thing happened to my mom’s 2013 Fusion when we had it, similar procedure. Try that

Starting the Vehicle with a Low Transmitter Battery

If the transmitter battery is weak, the DIC may display NO REMOTE DETECTED when you try to start the vehicle. The REPLACE BATTERY IN REMOTE KEY message may also be displayed at this time.

Kinja'd!!!

To start the vehicle: 1. Remove the plastic trim piece from the small storage area next to the accessory power outlet toward the front of the console, to access the transmitter slot.

2. Push the button on the recognized transmitter to extend the key blade. Insert the key blade into the transmitter slot.

3. With the vehicle in P (Park) or N (Neutral), press the brake pedal and the ignition button.

Replace the transmitter battery as soon as possible.
