It’s only temporary, which is a good thing, because I could get used to this.

How’s the ‘17 model? My parents recently picked up a low-mile ‘16 3.6R and it’s NICE compared to our old, reliable, but poorly-aging Murano. I dig it and, as a family, we didn’t see the new-for-2017 radar system or whatever Subaru installed around the rearview mirror. By the way, any thoughts about that new safety system?

Overall I like it. The transmission kind of sucks, but someone else made a comment that it has a learning function so maybe if it wasn’t a loaner it would be better. The EyeSight safety system has been around since at least 2013. It was an option on higher trims when we bought our 2013, but we didn’t pony up for it. So far it has been more annoying than anything. It has warned me about obstacles ahead that weren’t really that close and the blind spot detection seems to be hit or miss, but maybe I’m still getting used to where cars have to be for it to warn me. It does seem to sense cars that are going to overtake you as they approach and warn you not to change lane even though they aren’t in your blind spot yet. Tonight it stopped the car on its own when I was backing into up my driveway that is on a slope, because it thought it would hit it. I tried again more slowly and it was fine. The parking sensors can fortunately be turned off in a situation like that if the car gets confused. I haven’t tried the adaptive cruise or lane keeping yet. A coworker with a 2017 tells me they work very well. I need to give it a few more days, but so far I’d say it is several years behind the system BMW offers, but then again the Outback is a lot less expensive.
