Post a picture or two of your vehicle’s interior here, and tell me if there’s anything unique that you’ve done to it.

Kinja'd!!!

Here’s my Land Cruiser’s interior. As far as stuff I’ve done, I replaced the steering wheel recently, and I added a few neat 3D printed things: the dual cup holder you can see next to my shifter, and the cell phone holder poking out of the dash where there’s usually a useless ass cubby hole. Oh, I also added a center diff lock switch.

In the back, I added a ‘Land Cruiser Attic’ (hanging from the roof) and my bootleg ass replacement for a drawer system that needs to be covered:

Kinja'd!!!

So what have you ne’er do wells done to make the inside of your vehicles a more pleasant place?

I guess the only modifications are a leather scented little tree, that labbit on the gear shift which was a gift from a friend, and a suction cup cell phone holder next to the A-pillar which you can’t see from this angle. Also there was this really weird amber colored sticky goop all over the steering wheel buttons and light controls when I got the car, so I cleaned that off. Modification if it was there when I got it and isn’t anymore I guess.

My truck, a standard cab, has MINIMAL space behind the seat. But I want to use what space is there, so I made a simple tray out of one piece of plywood and one 2x4:

Kinja'd!!!

The plywood lays flat, nestled between the rear of the cab and the seat frame, and has notches to fit around the seat belt retractors. The 2x4 is positioned so that the seat can still travel all the way back. This leaves just a few inches of room for stuff, but that’s all I need to have a spot for fluids, ratchet straps, ball-mount, snow brush, cargo blanket, and a tarp.

The interior of ‘Humdrum’ (my 2009 Hyundai Accent hatch):

Kinja'd!!!

Cheap rubber floor mats under the pedals for all the Canadian winter salt and mud... and keeping the water from my shoes/boots from getting to the actual floor. I have them just laying on top of the original mats as there’s plenty of space, none of them move an inch while driving, and they don’t foul the pedals at all.

I’ve got an official solid milled steel WRC shift knob given to me by a good friend back in university - it’s got a bit of its own patina now from years of use (I’ll have to take a good close-up of it someday). I used the knob in my old Subaru since 2009 and had to stop when I got the Accent in 2013 as it didn’t fit. A cheap aluminum thread adapter from Ebay last year meant I could bring the thing back into action. It sortof means a lot to me to use it and I want to use it in every car I get as the years go by (as long as standard transmissions exist anyway :P). It has a nice heft to it and feels more comfy to me than the car’s old OEM synthetic knob. Otherwise, I’ve got a 12v socket-charged LED flashlight for emergencies, so it’s always charged up when I need it (right socket in that pic), and an FM transmitter / USB charger in the left socket (I rarely use the transmitter anymore, but my MP3 player makes weird clicks while charging when plugged in to the Aux input, but no weird clicks when charging while playing through the transmitter, so I use the transmitter to listen to my music when it’s charging.

As for the trunk - custom 3D-modelled (by me) and 3D-printed snow brush holder that mounts to my parcel shelf when I’m not using it. It works great! Oppo user Santiago kindly printed my parts in ABS plastic (much more durable than PLA) for me for a very fair price, and they’ve worked great through two winters now! :D

I’m too lazy to take pics but the bmw now has nothing in it except for some floor mats, and the cruze has taken the red fuzzy die from the bmw and has a small collapsible crate filled with emergency roadside supplies. I kinda want to put the fuzzy die on every car that I drive in the future so it would be like a metaphorical torch.

Plywood is the best. Regular cabs, at least in small trucks, present an issue to me: I’m pretty fat, and in the newest US model Ranger I can’t get the seat back far enough that my gut doesn’t hit the wheel. Now it also can’t move far enough back that my legs can fit comfortably, but I think gut space is the bigger, more American issue.

The awesome thing is that the parcel shelf still hinges 100% perfectly. So, you need brush? Open hatch, flip up shelf, remove brush, go scrape / brush things, come back, clip brush back in, flip parcel shelf back down, close hatch. :)

I’m more than willing to share the Sketchup 3D file to any other Oppos that want to modify it to their own tastes for printing, or to provide the STL file if they want to print an exact copy of the one I have somewhere. You want ABS plastic though - PLA just warps in the summer heat and wouldn’t last!

I spent A LOT of time cleaning and detailing my Trailblazer interior two Saturdays ago. One thing I’d like to do to it: I want to remove the plastic wrap that was never taken off of the chrome CHEVROLET runner near the doors. That’s the factory plastic wrap original to the vehicle. But it’s been on there for 10+ years so it only comes off in tiny pieces if I pick at it. How can I remove it cleanly, easily and w/o damaging anything?

took a little work to get the most of it in the shot. it has an old metal tractor seat. it has a 6 ball shifter knob( it USED to be the same color as the truck), a milage master vacuum gauge, the optional dash tach. its now radio delete(couldnt hear it over the truck anyhow. heater delete. has an upgraded clutch pedal return spring.

Hair dryer? I mean pull the pieces off the car so you’re only working on that piece, but I’d think heat would help you get it off there. Alternatively, I’d probably try to soak it. Maybe just water at first, then goo gone.

Not much new, but then again, this interior has stayed exactly the same for 49 years, and is a perfectly nice place to be, so why mess with a good thing?

I did fix the clock, though. Does that count? It’s a pretty neat mechanism – it’s a spring-wound movement that runs for 5 minutes or so, then fires a solenoid that winds it for another 5 minutes’ worth.

Not the best picture ever, but I installed Recaros from an Evo X in my old E36 M3.

Kinja'd!!!

On the plus side, they hold me in place far better than the old sport seats.

On the down side, they make the car smell like an old Honda instead of smelling like an old baseball glove like it used to. But they needed to be recovered anyway, so I’d have lost that smell regardless. The Recaros are also not quite as comfortable on my occasional 24+ hour drives from Austin to Idaho (though decently close). The original BMW sport seats were seriously amazing in that regard.

My steering wheel was also starting to peel, so I recovered it in alcantara.

Kinja'd!!!

It took two tries to get it right - you can see a crease or two from the first time. It took so long I left it for almost a year before redoing it and getting it right finally. The key was to use rubber cement and actually glue it down. I’d read you shouldn’t need glue, but that’s a bunch of crap. So when I redid it, I used glue and it’s almost factory perfect now (including the M stitching). This is the one I’m proudest of, since it looks great and I did everything but weave the cloth myself. (Even my wife thinks it looks good, and she’s very leery of most of my projects).

The last two things are little.

Kinja'd!!!

I lost my original Aukey flush mount dual USB charger a few weeks ago, so I upgraded to the new one with dual Qualcomm quick charge 3.0 ports. It’s great to have my phone quick charge in the car now, especially since the battery is starting to show it’s age.

The other thing is even smaller - I threaded the Aux-in port behind the stereo and behind the HVAC controls and on board computer to come out through the little sunglass cubby. There was even a hole in the top of the tray already. The cord reaches all the way to the back seat, or I can just push it back up inside with all the other wires. I may try to mount some kind of cord retractor back up in there someday.

I should also note - the steering wheel isn’t crooked. Getting my car in the garage is like getting Airwolf back in the lair. Sorry ladies and gents - it was too much work to go back in the house, find my keys, and snake my way into the driver’s seat to straighten the wheel.
