The NHL made it official today that they will not participate in the 2018 olympics. Meaning any NHL players who do could face fines and suspensions from their respective teams.

Why is the NHL run by someone who hates hockey?

I kinda get it though - it’s a physical risk for some players who have big contracts... Having players in different teams play together, and playing against your regular teammates can mess up a team too. To most of the players it’s just a game, so I get it from both sides... tough call.

As a child of the 80s I say good, yes it’s nostalgia speaking but I miss those days of unknowns and amateur players.

I saw that. Super disappointing. Hopefully the teams do the right bing and allow those who want to play to play. I hate Gary Bettman.

You wouldn’t want sports to get in the way of making money, would you?

I think it’s more that he hates hockey fans, actually. Not convinced he knows much about actual hockey one way or the other.

Right?

I remember the 1992 Men’s Basketball team:

Charles Barkley, Forward, Phoenix Suns
Larry Bird, Forward, Boston Celtics
Clyde Drexler, Guard, Portland Trailblazers
Patrick Ewing, Center, New York Knicks
Magic Johnson, Guard, Los Angeles Lakers
Michael Jordan, Guard, Chicago Bulls
Christian Laettner, Forward, Duke University
Karl Malone, Forward, Utah Jazz
Chris Mullin, Forward, Golden State Warriors
Scottie Pippen, Forward, Chicago Bulls
David Robinson, Center, San Antonio Spurs
John Stockton, Guard, Utah Jazz

First game vs Cuba was 136-57.

I mean this decision was going to be getting in the way of sports making money either way.

Doesn’t the NHL need the marketing boost the Olympics would provide? Isn’t this decision going to hurt their business?

Remember when the Olympics were contested by amateur athletes? Well, except for all the Eastern Bloc countries.

Yeah, though we definitely aren’t going back to those days. Even in sports without significant professional leagues, the amount of time and effort required to compete at the highest levels means that there aren’t really many true amateur athletes anymore.

Well, amateur in the sense that they hadn’t yet turned pro. But that’s what made 1980 such a miracle. A bunch of US players nobody had heard of beat the best that Sweden and Russia had to offer. Did any of those US players go on to pro careers?

Not as bad as Crosby possibly blowing his ACL,MCL, Achilles and Brain Stem is for the Penguins. Its probably good for the NHL but terrible for individual teams

Well, he’s said he’s going regardless and Caps GM is OK with it... whether or not it happens is another matter.

...And just when I was looking forward to seeing a team with Crosby, McDavid and Toews...

True. But you guys would undoubtedly have Kane, Matthews and Pavelski, so it’s not like you aren’t missing out on your best possible game too. For that matter every other country competing, the best players are in the NHL and that’s an end of it.

I predict Swiss gold if no NHLers go at all. There aren’t many Swiss in the NHL but they seem to be a consistent mountain to climb at the Olympics regardless.

Would think whomever has the Broadcast rights to the “Games” would ask for a partial refund due to this significant change in talent.

Like The Masters Golf Tournament  field changing...will now be made up of the top 100 “Putt-Putt Champions” in the world.

So the NHL essentially adopted the Mark Cuban view. He has been agitating for years against allowing NBA players to go to the Olympics (and got louder after the Paul George incident).

Actually, the game v Finland (not Sweden) was his last game. I looked it up. 13 of the 16 went into the NHL, and a few had long careers. A couple played on Cup winning teams.

North American fan’s actually opposed NHL players going to the olympics. 53 percent of Canadians and 75 percent of Americans were against sending NHL players. Mainly because those fans would rather win a Stanley Cup vs an Olympic gold

The olympics don’t add that much of a boost. For a casual fan they care about it for 2 weeks then forget about it for the next 4 years

I’m surprised at that. Most fans I know want them to go.

I like seeing guys like Toews that end up with both. It’s a great accomplishment.
