I’ve been eyeballing these since Tom posted the article about V6 under 30k. They don’t look bad but I know nothing about them and can’t find any reviews of a V6 SR model.

Opinions? Experience with Nissan?

Had a rental for a couple weeks; so, take that for what it’s worth. Another car in non-rental spec might be entirely different. That said, I hated it. The CVT sounded like a cage of hamsters being flogged to within an inch of their lives when I pressed the pedal. The interior materials made me long for my parents old Chevette (okay, not really, but you get the point), and I hated the styling. It was, however, functional and fairly comfortable with no shakes or wind noise. It was stable and easy to drive.

My experience with the Altima is limited to a 4 cylinder rental spec one.

It is big and cushy and has nice comfy seats. It’s quiet and gets good mileage. It is a car, that exists, and has nothing fun to drive about it at all. The CVT is annoyingly programmed to resist all attempts to accelerate with anything less than flooring the pedal (I don’t hate all CVTs, the one in my wife’s Subaru Impreza is generally fine).

I’m assuming a V6 SR is a more powerful and well-equipped version of the same basic idea. According to Nissan’s website the SR trims have some kind of “sport tuned suspension” but I don’t know how different it is from the base setup.

I owned a 2011 V6 for several years. It was fine. It actually would go when you put your foot into it, was a comfortable ride, the “sport” suspension was ok, got decent mileage, the interior was fine. In other words, it was a perfectly serviceable appliance. I didn’t really have issues with the CVT as some people have — perhaps that’s because they tweak it for the higher end models, I just have a leadfoot so never noticed any delay with slower acceleration, or I just blocked it out of my mind so it wouldn’t drive me crazy. So it wasn’t a car I would recommend to an enthusiast, but as a 4-door sedan DD that I put a lot of miles on and wouldn’t cry myself to sleep if it got scratched or dinged, it was more than acceptable. So I recommend it??

Avoid a CVT like the plague. I’d think that 2.0T Fusion or Malibu is in the same price range.

We get the odd 3.5 SL model in the Enterprise fleet and they aren’t bad cars per say. My family rented one for a week when my mother totaled the old Jaguar so I pulled out a V6 SL model and delivered it to the closest branch because it is still in the same rental class as the 2.5 S and therefore costs the same (Rental car companies: where your motto is ‘well, why did he get that nicer one!?’) Feature wise they’re pretty well loaded to the gills. Leather, Nav, a great Bose system, sunroof, etc. And the CVT actually handles the V6 torque pretty well and levels out the power delivery in a surprisingly pleasant way. In a 2.5 I always have to keep them in Ds mode around town, otherwise it won’t actually do anything when the light goes green. But the 3.5 is a very drive-able car, even in normal mode. I still wouldn’t take one over a V6 Camry, but I wouldn’t tell you not to buy one.

I think it’s ugly, and I see plenty of them driving around at night with no lights on. But I can’t speak to the driving or ownership experience.
