Kinja'd!!!

And not a single one can/will perform an inspection on an OBDI car. Excuses include:

1. Don’t have the ASM equipment/dyno to do it (this one is true)

2. Our dyno is broken (this one is bullshit and I’ve heard it from three shops now; it’s just more labor and they don’t want to do it)

3. It’s too close to lunch/closing time and the OBDI inspections take longer (motherfucker going to take a punch to the face if I hear this again)

Please tell me this isn’t the Houston area?

If so I guess I’ll hold on to my WA tags longer :(

That’s fucked up. If you are being forced to have an inspection then you shouldn’t be able to get turned away from an inspection station. If the state doesn’t want to pay to have the equipment necessary at all stations then they should make obdI cars exempt from inspection.

Dallas. It’s very weird to me because I had no issue last year getting it done, and I’ve had other OBDI cars in the past that weren’t an issue. It seems like it’s just gotten low-volume enough that places feel comfortable shunning the work.

State is going to get a moderately-worded letter from me about this, it’s ridiculous, quite frankly. And our inspections are now tied in with registration renewal, so I’m double illegal at the moment because no one can get their shit together for me and there’s not much I can do about it.

Yup. I tried to do mine near Hobby airport and was turned away by at least 5 shops before finding one who said “cash only, even if it fails- and I won’t retest” which also is illegal but I knew it would pass (brand new exhaust less than a year old) so I went with it - it passed.

The place I use now is much better and never gives me trouble. It’s on the west side of town.

Wow, that’s a serious level of bullshit. If no one will inspect you, it seems pretyt obvious that the state is saying you don’t need to be inspected. Do you have some type of government official you can call to talk about this with? You’re doing everything in your power to get your car inspected. If the stations can’t or won’t, you shouldn’t be penalized.

I hate living in NJ, but at least we have state run inspection stations. And we don’t have to pay for them (because we pay too much for everything else).

This. 1,000 times this.

Inspections are required for cars newer than 25 years old. OBD II was required starting in 1996. That leaves less than 4 model years worth of cars that need the old test and plenty of shops who just don’t give a crap any more about testing them.

Yeah I’m getting in contact with them as we speak in a couple of different avenues. Professional words will be spoken strongly.

Unfortunately, governments are pretty bad in general at thinking about this logically. Just because the private inspection stations don’t want to do the service, I wouldn’t expect the state to relax in any way on their requirement that it be done. These beauracracies are all too happy to specify requirements of what must be done without considering how it will happen.
