Kinja'd!!!

Was spent tightening cooling connections on the Galaxie, inspecting the rear brake function... and pulling out the transmission to inspect it and replace the front pump seal. Success! Probably. It’s nice to be able to pull one and have it back in within a day.

I will be trying to work on some other things today like testing the fuel sending unit and connections.

“So what did you do today Ramblin?”

“Oh just pulled out my transmission, nbd.”

Pulled out, disassembled the governor, took the front pump apart for easier seal replace, checked the balance valves on the side of the valve body, put it back together and back in...

What year? C4? C6? I had a ‘65 long ago. Miss that car.

‘63. FX transmission - updated small-case Cruise-O-Matic which replaced the air-cooled Cruise-O-Matic for the sixes (option) and the smallblock. Slightly bigger MX “medium case” transmission was used with the big-blocks, and then Ford took the MX internals (mostly), deleted the rear pump, and jammed the result in the FX case to make the FMX.

Yep. My dad’s ‘73 Cougar had an FMX. What a piece of junk.

As far as I’m aware, there’s nothing intrinsically wrong with the COM family, but I have no idea what the QC was like on the later FMX - kind of suspect it wasn’t the greatest considering it was a “quick, we need a small auto!” panic build/parts bin special out of old tech (and very old castings/toolings), built cheap. Moving to Type F fluid and different clutch chemistry probably had its own teething troubles as well. The FX and MX are technically Borg Warner designs, FWIW, and I believe the MX was used for several months on Cadillacs one year, because the factory had had a fire or some such.
