Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Finally dropped off my Forester for the infamous short block replacement. Got a loaner 6-cylinder Outback with the saddle brown leather interior package. Yeah... I’m not gonna want to give this back.

Is the 3.6 a cvt or does it have a proper multi speed auto? And yeah that’s a damn nice car.

I hope you like all the new I-Sight nannies. Last I drove the Limited Outback in December I hated the lane departure warning and auto braking stuff.

If you peel off the loaner sticker, you get to keep the car. It’s the law.

Subaru dealers are the worst (smartest).. This was my loaner when I took the SG in;

That’s the touring version. Top of line, and has a nicer interior trim than the normal Outback, including different door panels.

Funny how a Subaru dealer gives you the nicest car on the lot for a loaner and a BMW dealer gives you like an X1 or 320i or something.

Last time I got a loaner from the Audi dealer, it was a 4 cylinder Nissan Altima with a CVT.

I was going to mention that! I always get a standard A3 or a Q3 when I take a loaner from Audi. Once I got a Q5 but it had to be a base one.

You would think that they would want to temp you to trade up, right?

Anxious to hear about your experience. I’ve decided to push my shortblock replacement back toward the end of my 100k powertrain warranty. Sitting at 47k burning a borderline amount of oil.

They are all CVTs now. Subaru’s CVTs are actually really good and a massive improvement over the old 5-speed auto which was super laggy.

They have a 3.6R touring as a loaner?! That is like one of the most expensive cars Subaru sells. All of ours are base Forsters and Imprezas.

Better a base model of the same brand than your typical rental car.

I’ve had two Subaru loaners so far. Both were top-of-the-line Outbacks. One had 100 miles, the other, 15.

I think they’re trying to sell me something.

My car started burning oil at about 25k, it just got worse and worse. By 35k it was at quart every 1200 miles. It will probably get to the point where you get tired of adding 4-5 qts between oil changes.

This one has 10k... I don’t think they are trying to sell me this one in particular, but they are definitely teasing an upgrade.

They had a Forester and a Crosstrek too... I didn’t see what trims, but it looks like they have a pretty decent mix. This dealer group also owns Lexus next door and Audi down the street so maybe their clientele is a little different than other Subaru dealers.

I’ve wondered how long they hold them before selling them as dealership specials. I put 2,000 miles on the one that started with 15. It was the loaner while they were doing a long block on my WRX.

Highlander can chime in (actually looks like he already did) and I’ll definitely post about it when it’s done. I’m at 52k , so I’m also having them put new spark plugs in the heads while it is out to save on the labor of doing them again at 60k.

That one’s a CVT - the high torque version, but still a CVT. I’ve only driven the normal CVT, and it’s alright, but I missed having gears.

I found EyeSight annoying the one time I experienced it. It didn’t help that the person whose car it was didn’t like to use turn signals...

I do 4 oz in 1200 city miles (according to the dealership.) However, I burned nearly 2 qt driving mostly back roads from South Dakota to LA and back (3900 miles). The dealership is working with me and said to bring it by to start another test when I know I’ll get a good chunk of 85 mph interstate cruising in.

I pretty consistently get the low oil light within 2500 miles of a change. Suspiciously, it went over 5000 immediately after buying the car CPO at 22700 miles. The service department at Courtesy Subaru kicks ass though, so I’m not too worried.

Some dealers just don’t get it. When I was in high school there was a local Audi dealer that did A6's and A8's. My friend’s dad quickly became a repeat customer.

Well we are the only Subaru dealer in 200 miles. We have all of the clientele. But you probably have a little bit of a point there. Our other brands are GMC, Buick, Cadillac and Hyundai along with Subaru on the same lot.

The door panels are so much softer than the hard vinyl ones in my wife’s 2.5i Premium. I love them.

Our subaru dealer loans out the premium models, lets them collect about 5k miles then sells them as “used” cars to Canadians.

The dealer my family goes to seems to have loaded versions of the current model year as their loaners. In the past we have gotten a loaded Forester and a top of the line Impreza sport. It seems like they make sure they have the best examples of the current year to help drive sales and then sell them at the end of the year (part of me thinks they might get more at the end of the year with higher trims than base models). They also tend to be super low miles. The Forester had ~1200mi on it and the Impreza had ~100.

Like the others said, it’s a CVT. I’ve only driven it for a little bit so far, but it is kind of hit or miss. Interestingly, when you accelerate from a stop it does an approximation of distinct upshifts rather than just hanging out at 5k until you let up. But on the highway it seemed to lag quite a bit in kicking down, which is a shame because the H6 has so much smooth torque once it does. So far, I think the one in the 2.5 is better behaved and better suited to the motor, but we’ll see.

I believe is has some kind of learning function. Also if you press the downshift paddle in drive it will give you a lower range and more revs on command.

Yeah - sounds more like a difference in management attitude then. My experiences with purchase and service at this dealer has been pretty good, and I’ve heard generally good things from friends who have bought cars at all of their brand stores. I live in a big metro, so there are at least two dealers for pretty much everything except exotics. The competition probably helps keep them honest, though there are some absolutely awful dealers here too.

Good to know. I do use the paddle on our 2.5i Outback when I get it in the mountains - the CVT seems to get confused when it’s on a grade for a while.

Yeah, we have to be decent to them because it is a small town and management and the owners actually take pride in being good to customers. Doesn’t mean we don’t get a bad egg in here every now and then, but they are weeded out pretty quickly.

I think the Outback are higher trims, but the others are lower I think since we tend to sell all of our higher trim models quicker.
