2nd pilot > 1st pilot :)

Silly Aussies, this is why you’re supposed to operate your hornets from carriers, easy to eliminate those crosswinds when you can turn the runway (though I do wonder what happens when you want to fight a war, but sea/weather conditions are too rough to launch/recover fighters).

Short take off roll for a Legacy bug with two bags. Of course, I can count the amount of grey Hornets I’ve seen take off from shore on one hand, so what do I know lol.

No. 2 learned from watching No. 1.

Maybe Two is just the better stick.

You recover anyway. I watched a documentary about carrier ops (maybe on PBS, don’t remember), and the captain launched the fighters in foul weather even though he knew that recovery would be extremely hairy. His reasoning: if we’re in a war, we can’t stay grounded because of weather. They had bolter after bolter, and then had to put a tanker up—another airplane that would have to be recovered—so the rest of the wing could get down. The tanker gig fell to a junior pilot in the rotation, but the senior pilot took the flight, telling the other pilot, “You’ll thank me later.” They eventually got everybody on deck, but it took a very long time, and the tanker was on fumes when he finally landed. The pilots were grumbling, but the captain was unrepentant.

I was waiting for 1 to put a wheel in the grass.

Short in amount of time, perhaps, but the focal length of the lens capturing the image is very long, so distance wise, it’s hard to tell. Beautiful video, though, ain’t it?

Those ailerons serve a purpose on the ground too!!

They were off the ground in roughly 1600 feet.

Sounds like the documentary series Carrier. The segment you’re talking about, as well as the whole series, is free on Youtube.

I believe you. How do you know? Is that not typical?

I honestly don’t know. I spent the past four years in helicopters, so takeoff rolls aren’t my expertise. I’d imagine an F/A-18's minimum length is between 1400 and 1650 feet.

That’s a pretty tight range...

So you are a pilot? I envy pilots their craft. When I die, I want to be remembered as one of the greatest pilots who never flew.

No, I was just a mechanic.

Keep in mind that’s also an estimate for a minimum take off roll. It could be a couple hundred feet less.

My wife was an A&P mechanic in the US Army from ‘84 to ‘87. Chinooks and Cobras, I believe. Chinooks, for sure.

Chinooks were what I worked on from 2013 until last month.

They sure do! But if she ain’t leaking she ain’t flying.
