Why do I want a 2nd-gen Tacoma so bad?

They’re just so damn attractive. I don’t even care if it’s just the inline 4 or the V6; I’ve just always liked the style of them. Like... I’d kill for a base model with nothing more than a camper shell and some knobbier tires with white lettering. Absolute perfection.

If you’re seriously looking make sure to avoid 05-08 trucks that haven’t had the recall frame replacement. Also keep in mind, most base 2wd models (at least here in the NE) were fleet trucks that have mostly city miles with plenty of idling hours.

I’ve got an 06 crew cab sport with the v6 and I love it. Most of my friends think it is atleast 5 years newer than it is. I think it has some of the cleanest lines only matched by the last gen ranger. The Dakota, last gen Colorado, and frontier haven’t aged well at all imo

Yeah, I’d be looking for sub-50k miles regardless, if I did decide to buy one. I more than likely won’t, but I do love the things.

i’d be happy with a HiLux from the same era.

That’s a nice $43,256 no-haggle-price 2006 Toyota Tacoma with 250,501 miles you’ve got there.

Toyota does asymmetrical squared off flared fenders: nobody notices.

Chevy does asymmetrical squared off flared fenders:everyone loses their shit.

To be clear I’m not referring to you or anyone else on here, I’m barely even trying to make a point. It’s just something I noticed on the Taco for the first time just now and it stuck me funny that they don’t get hate for one of the features that was so reviled (at least among a substantial proportion of auto journalists) when the Colorado was first introduced.

I thought everyone got pissed at the squared off Silverado. HUGE FLARES tiny wheels

People were losing their shit over the Colorado too. At the time the complaint seemed to be about full-size design cues on a small truck. #1 I don’t actually see the similarities to the full-size fenders and #2 I think what they did looks good, but hey that’s their decision to make. Looks are subjective. What I like you don’t what I don’t you do etc. Fwiw I also like the square fenders on the Silverado, but again that’s just me (and evidently enough others to make a good business case for it).

But I don’t care about that, you like what you like. I just found it amusing that the Taco has the same fender design and it just got ignored.

Agree. Our 2005 gets mistaken for a newer truck all the time.

We tow a trailer so the TRD Sport was the way to go, hoodscoop and all. I had an 86 xtra cab as a first car so going back to a Toyota truck was a given.

Ours had a frame replacement in 2015, currently they are replacing or reimbursing owners for rear leaf springs.

At first it seems like they are way more expensive than other trucks, but once you buy one you realise why that is. After 5 years we could sell ours for pretty close to what we paid.
