Seriously, that’s the cupholder? That looks like it would break with anything larger than a can of soda.

I still remember the days of driving with the drink in your crotch as you’re shifting because carmakers didn’t include cupholders. Ahh, the time of my youth.

I realized now that many vehicles I have experienced cannot outhandle a thermos but can embarrass a cupholder when it comes to grip.

Looks more stable than the old Saab ones but that’s not saying much. Saab also made sure that the central display would shit the bed before you had time to worry about what info you couldn’t see with a cup in the holder.

Better than the ones in the E39.

It’s the German’s passive aggressive way of discouraging beverages in the car. My wife’s X1 doesn’t even have a built in cup holder there. There’s a clip in one that you push into a slot.

There is no room anywhere else in that cabin for cupholders. I think they are good for what they area. I do not like getting any drinks with a possible leaky lid though.

It’s a damn sight better than what my E39 came with. Those damn Yoorupeens just don’t get cupholders.

Cup holders are for the weak. Until my last car (Corolla) I never had a car with cup holders. My car before the Corolla (GS300) came with one from the factory but my mom’s dog broke it before the car became mine.

The Mazda has 2 normal cup holders in the center console and a “sports drink” holder in each door. During the summer I put a water bottle or Powerade bottle in each

No one else feels the need to comment on the matching coffee cup? I mean if the whole setup is BMW they could’ve made things more compatible.

The E6x uses the same design. I have a plastic coke bottle in it right now that barely hangs on. Today, when a new song started and the first bass dropped it made a jump like it was surprised. I know that it was some imperfection in the road, but the timing was spot on, and it was hilarious.

So there you go, they are this flimsy for your entertainment.

So incredibly flimsy. IIRC, my ‘99 93 had the popout one just above the CD slot to ensure even less functionality. I’ve never hated and loved a car more at the same time. The premium feel of the heated leather seats, the console ignition, the liftback utility, and the turbo guage, certainly met their match in the shitty electronics, inconvenient quirks, and ridiculous price of parts.

I have a feeling I may become a Saab hoarder one day.

Surprisingly, the best cupholders I’ve ever used were in my old Dodge Neon. They’d snugly hold a large fountain drink or coffee without blocking any controls.

I really like the center console one in my taco for most drinks though the girlfriend always seems to steal it despite not having anything better to with her hands, like you know driving.

My Dad had an OG Taco. The cupholder popped out from the top of the center console and blocked the HVAC controls entirely.

I’ve bought 4 thermoses (thermosi?) to try and find one that fits well. Now I just say screw it and wedge it in the triangular pocket. The only thing it fits well is a 12 oz can and Red Bull cans

Glad you’re enjoying your second E9x.

Yes, they are. When I’m traveling, I just buy a small-ish foam cup of ice at a convenience store. Fits well enough to not go flying when I round a corner, and keeps me from drinking so much that I have to take a leak before the beast needs more go-juice...

Spring backroadtrip was this past weekend. Stopped at one place that didn’t have a fountain. Bought a regular, small bottle of water. Turning out of the parking lot it tilted to one side, but looked stable enough. A couple miles down the road, I took a sharp turn and it just went flying across the car - luckily toward the passenger side!

Yeah it does, I have a towel in the M3 just for that. The first time my dad drove my car, he had a cup of coffee and he went over a bump and spilled it all over my gear stick. My defrost button was actually stuck for a little because some coffee got on it.

I got the cup from BMW too. It was shortly after I had gotten the M3 and they had free shipping, so I was like why not. You’d think a cup sold by BMW would fit better, but sadly no.

A 24 oz red bull fits pretty good as well. I was driving with some friends from Tulsa to Dallas for a weekend trip. While I was fueling the M3, one friend was like you want anything and I was like a red bull. So he comes back with the largest one they had. Surprisingly, it fit in the cup holder.

Yeah me too, sometimes I wish I had gotten a 335i. Then I think for a second and am really happy with what i have. I don’t need 2 expensive out of warranty BMWs.

Yeah, they’re not really good at accepting bottles, can make for some comedy though.

Yup, they suck .

Kinja'd!!!

I actually bought a smaller water bottle to replace this one that fits in the cup holder.

My sister got me one of those vacuum tumblers that I really like for bringing coffee to work but it’s too damn big to fit in the cup holder. I’ve taken to wedging it into the passenger seat bolster using my work bag (on the floor in the pic above) to hold it in place. This is a very sub-optimal solution because I have to take it easy turning and braking if I want to avoid tipping over the coffee.

They’re also just rattly and annoying. The drive to my mother-in-law’s is about an hour and a half on some bumpy 2-lane roads. The car handles the bumps fine but if my wife puts a can of soda in there or something, once the drink gets about half empty it rattles like fucking crazy. I usually try to finish the drink ASAP and crumple up the can to throw on the back seat to stop the rattling.

There really isn’t a good work around with the cup holders. I have a coffee mug, that I got from BMW that fits in the cup holder pretty well. Even then, I feel like if I’m too aggressive, it’s probably not going to stay put, or I’ll have even more coffee spilled in my car.

The first time I picked up one of my work friends in the car, back in like 2014 when I had just gotten the car, we had just gotten some coffee. I put my cup in the cup holder, hit a bump and spilled coffee all over her legs.

Kinja'd!!! "Textured Soy Protein" (texturedsoyprotein)

Yes, I’ve had things tip out of the cup holder as well. Like I can fit a 20 oz plastic soda bottle but if they’re anything other than perfectly cylindrical and instead have bulges and indents, they can tip over within the cup holder.

I’ve thought about getting something like this adapter . I worry that the heavy metal vacuum tumbler in the adapter might be too tippy. But I think I’m going to buy it and see what happens. $16.95 for a piece of plastic is kind of ridiculous for a piece of plastic but I don’t care.
