Drive+ is a zombie you might want to wake up for a month, and it'll cost you less than a double sugarbomb at Starbucks.

Kinja'd!!!

I was SO disappointed when /Drive died and moved to a paid channel. They were my favorite Youtube auto journos. Years later, I just pulled the trigger on a subscription out of curiosity and was very surprised by what I found: a completely dead channel with 40 videos that have been downvoted into oblivion. But why!?

I think that the main issue was the lack of content Drive+ provided for $3.99 per month. From what I’ve read in the comments, people didn’t feel like they were getting what they paid for. Furthermore, it’s hard to say exactly what it is that they were paying for in the first place. Out of the 40 videos on offer, some are 45 minutes long while others are 17. It’s very sporadic. There are also lengthy tech segments in some of the shorter films that leave you feeling like you paid for an Engineering Explained video. Those are free...

I understand why all of this content was received so poorly. Judging by the like/dislike ratios, most of the films are bad and some are downright horrible. But that’s just not the case here. They’re actually great, and now I have around 20 hours of TV quality car content to watch, which I plan on burning through in a month, AKA I’ve paid 10 cents per video. Compared to the 3-4 videos per month the original subscribers experienced, that’s an amazing deal. I’ll cancel it in May, and that’ll be the end of that.

Finally, those tech segments? I haven’t watched anything this informative in recent memory. They’re fascinating, and I find myself rewinding them constantly because there is just SO MUCH detailed information that I can’t comprehend it all in one pass. It’s like a college lecture, but actually interesting. Highlights so far? Steve Dinan’s explanation of ECU tuning from the eighties through the present day, and Betim’s (BBI Autosport) explanation of how he builds cars via focusing on heat management. Both were eye opening and made me feel like I’d really learned something.

TL/DR: If you have $4 you won’t be disappointed by a month of Drive+ as long as you cancel after you’ve watched all the content. Since it’s dead, you can see everything they’ve ever uploaded all at once, and then be done with it. And finally, ignore the comments/dislike bar as they’re not actually a reflection of the content’s quality. The videos are worth your time.

Drive has its moments, and anything with Betim from BBI is awesome. The TST podcasts with Betim belong to into their hall of fame for “best podcast episodes”. I think the zombie conversion of Drive can be attributed to one of their executives embezzling 8 million from the owner of Drive (Epix). 8 million could have made Drive better, if not, retain its former glory. http://jalopnik.com/former-drive-partner-emil-rensing-arrested-by-fbi-on-f-1773184546

I think all car journos (with a proven track record of solid content) should merge into a Netflix like channel/network.

$10 or $15 a month.

Get Motortrend OnDemand, Drive, DriveTribe Plus or whatever. And then, keep buying out good shows from the velocity channel and Top Gear Korea’s old seasons and what not.

WHOAH I did NOT know about that scandal. And I’m all over the TST podcast and one takes every week. At the same time I’m not at all surprised that Matt hasn’t ever mentioned it.

I’m 100% down with that, it’d be a win for whoever could wrangle that deal AND for the viewers. I pay for MTOD and have also been disappointed by the content there, to an extent. Some days I’m hyped over half an hour of content, but other days it’s yet another 3 minute video of a flat fender Jeep.

Yeah, I get what you’re saying.

The content isn’t consistent - and that’s really not their fault. Its a hand full of cool guys with limited money and time. They’re also not professional TV personalities, writers or media studies majors (I wouldn’t want them to be that either). Oh, MCM would also be a good addition :)

If you get more groups under one umbrella, the consistency will go up.  And I’d rather have them focus on car stuff, rather than worry about funding.

MCM is always a good addition! Another example of two cool people with limited time and money who put out great content.

Take it as a lesson. Don’t charge people for stuff after providing it for free. also, don’t provide it free in the first place. There is a saying, “If you are good at something, never do it for free.”

Yep I’m familiar with that one, I’ve heard it from the “real” photographers I volunteer with from time to time. Artists have an especially difficult time with selling themselves short just to move pieces. Fortunately I am not a career artist...

I recently got MTOD and really like it. I think they went about it the right way, make some new exclusive stuff and keep the old stuff on youtube just with a delay. Plus you get some live motorsport thrown into the deal.

Honestly, Motor Trend On Demand is everything Drive+ wished it could be. Better everything, plus they added a huge backlog of stuff to browse through when you’r ebored. Just last night I watched some season recaps of formula 1 from the early 2000s. Why? BECAUSE I CAN!

What else do you watch from the backlog? I actually have a really hard time finding things to watch from that section

Old races, old TV shows, and the past episodes of series that I watch right now simply because I’m already in their website and am too lazy to go to youtube.

Yeah I’ve been going through Roadkill Garage again, I honestly like it more than Roadkill sometimes. More wrenching and a little less fail

I messaged TST after this article was released on his thoughts on Emil and his effects on Drive, he said “I have no comments on Emil”. I think Emil ran quite a bit deeper in lifestyle than TST..He had his own Porsche GT3 and is a veteran in the tech industry. Unfortunately it doesnt seem to be new.
