Kinja'd!!!

A coworker of mine is looking to get rid of his Boxster S. Since he and his wife had their first child last year, it hasn’t been driven much. Just started and move around the garage/driveway. It’s a low mileage 986 3.2 (50k miles maybe?)

It hasn’t had the IMS fix put in place and it probably hasn’t been driven hard. Should I be afraid of this? Anyone got experience here?

I did a little workup of recent sales to see what a reasonable price range would be since I don’t think he even knows what he wants for it.

I don’t know about IMS issues, but if it isn’t been done, I would take the price history and make an offer based on the cost of having a mechanic do the IMS fix. That’s what I did with my XJ8, since it had never had the absolutely necessary timing chain tensioner upgrade from plastic to metal.

From what I’ve heard, these are great until something serious breaks and you’re in for an engine out service and/or ludicrously expensive parts. Though if you really want one, why not?

Yes. Do it. When I’m an empty nester I will consider a Boxster near the top of my list of car options.

The IMS fix isn’t *that* expensive in the scheme of things. It’s also the only major major thing that 986s have that could go wrong. For $8-10k, I’d say go for it.
